We are always looking for amazing talent who can contribute to our growth and deliver results! Geotab is seeking an Embedded Camera Developer who will design, develop, and optimize the firmware stack for Geotab’s AI-enabled camera devices. If you love technology, and are keen to join an industry leader — we would love to hear from you!
Responsibilities
~1 min readAs an Embedded Camera Developer your key area of responsibility will be writing and testing high-quality code within Embedded Linux environments, implementing high-performance code for image processing pipelines, managing power consumption for edge-deployment, ensuring robust data integrity and security, and collaborating with cross-functional technical teams to deliver stable, scalable camera solutions. You will need to work closely with hardware teams and cross-functional technical teams.
To be successful in this role you will be a self-starter, highly organized, meticulous, with high attention to detail, and a strong team player who can research and solve open-ended design problems while communicating complex technical decisions effectively. In addition, the successful candidate will have strong technical, analytical, and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to manage priorities among multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
-
Design, develop, and test embedded firmware for AI-enabled camera systems using C/C++, including architectural input on camera subsystem design.
-
Integrate and optimize ISP pipelines, video encoding/decoding modules.
-
Develop an in-depth understanding of the Geotab IoT devices (such as telematics devices, extendibility products, asset trackers, Video products) firmware and how various modules work.
-
Collaborate with hardware teams to interpret data sheets and ensure seamless component integration through low-level hardware-software co-design.
-
Root causes and resolves complex firmware issues, including streaming latency, frame reordering, system crashes, and memory bottlenecks. Debug firmware issues using specialised tools (logic analyzer, oscilloscopes, JTAG, signal analyzers for MIPI-CSI) when necessary to troubleshoot hardware-software integration issues.
-
Develop unit, integration, and system-level tests (e.g., Pytest, Robot Framework) to validate feature requirements in real and simulated camera environments.
-
Participate in modular, reusable, hardware independent software/firmware development practices and adhere to test driven development principles.
-
Write scalable, high quality, secure embedded software using Geotab’s development standards in a variety of programming languages like C, C++, Python for Embedded Linux as required.
-
Documentation: Maintain accurate technical documentation for firmware architectures, interfaces, and debugging procedures.
-
Conduct comprehensive testing and code reviews to ensure that industry coding standards are followed.
-
5+ years of technical experience in development of image processing pipelines, video streams, object-oriented design, multithreaded programming, unit testing, and Linux platform development (user-space).
-
Post-secondary Diploma/Degree with specialization in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and work experience).
-
High proficiency in C/C++ for concurrent systems, experience in preemptive, multi-threaded Embedded Linux / Android environments, and proficiency in scripting languages like Bash or Python.
-
Expertise in troubleshooting camera-specific issues (e.g., frame synchronization, memory bottlenecks, stream stability) and performance profiling (CPU/Memory/Power) on embedded SoCs.
-
Practical knowledge of reading schematics and data sheets for components, microcontrollers, communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, MIPI-CSI), and hardware-software integration on embedded targets.
-
Experience or familiarity with test frameworks (Pytest, Robot Framework), version control and task management tools (GIT, SQL, JIRA), CI/CD pipelines, and Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational abilities with a high attention to detail, and a comfortable, entrepreneurial mindset in a flat organizational structure.
