Responsibilities

As a Senior Data Scientist your key area of responsibility will be producing timely, data-driven stories and analyses that establish Geotab as a leader in commercial transportation insights. You will be responsible for developing both rapid-response insights — delivered within 24–48 hours of a breaking news event — and longer-form analyses, including supply chain indices and fleet outcome reports for media, partners, and customers. You will need to work closely with Strategic Communications, PR, Altitude, and cross-functional teams including Product Analytics and Digital Marketing.

To be successful in this role you will be a naturally curious analyst who asks intelligent questions of the data, connects findings to a larger business narrative, and seeks domain expert validation to ensure accuracy. In addition, the successful candidate will have deep expertise in SQL and Python, the ability to integrate and validate insights from multiple connected data sources, and a proven track record of translating complex analyses into compelling stories for non-technical audiences.

  • Implement new statistical or mathematical methodologies for specific models of data analysis.
  • Provide expert project leadership as a SME: guidance to team members and participate in cross-departmental projects establishing Geotab as a leader in data science.
  • Create algorithms and predictive models to extract information required to solve complex business problems.
  • Conduct causality experiments by applying A/B experiments or epidemiological approaches to identify the root issues of an observed result.
  • Identify new, complex queries from Big Data infrastructure from data warehousing databases (i.e. Google BigQuery) to add value to the organization.
  • Use Python (including Jupyter Notebooks) and SQL to develop analyses and data-driven insights.
  • Collaborate with internal technical teams and external stakeholders — including Strategic Communications, PR, and Altitude — to gather requirements and validate insights.
  • Responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of ongoing metrics, reports, analyses, and dashboards to drive key business decisions, and translate complex data into compelling stories for media, partners, and customers.
  • 5–8 years of experience as a Data Scientist or in a similar role.
  • 5–8 years of experience writing complex SQL queries.
  • 5–8 years of experience programming in Python, including Jupyter Notebooks.
  • Demonstrated ability to ask intelligent, contextual questions of data — connecting findings to a larger business narrative.
  • Experience integrating and validating insights from multiple connected data sources.
  • Strong data storytelling and communication skills; ability to translate complex analyses into clear, compelling narratives for non-technical audiences.
  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally with communications, marketing, or PR teams.
  • Knowledge of data management and visualization techniques.
  • Solid understanding of statistical analysis and predictive modeling.
  • High accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Strong project management skills; able to identify needs, develop effective solutions, and manage projects through to completion.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to problem-solve to well-judged decisions.
  • Strong team-player with the ability to engage with all levels of the organization.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and comfortable in a flat organization.
If you got this far, we hope you're feeling excited about this role! Even if you don't feel you meet every single requirement, we still encourage you to apply.
