The Director of Finance is a strategic and operational leader responsible for overseeing the financial health, planning, reporting, and reimbursement performance of the organization. This position provides leadership for all finance and accounting functions, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, cash management, revenue cycle oversight, payer reimbursement analysis, compliance, and strategic financial planning.
The Director of Finance serves as a key business partner to executive leadership, providing financial insights and recommendations that support organizational growth, operational efficiency, profitability, and long-term sustainability. The ideal candidate possesses deep healthcare finance expertise, including health insurance reimbursement models, payer contracting analysis, and revenue cycle optimization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Lead the organization's financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial strategy.
- Develop and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to executive leadership.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support strategic business decisions.
- Monitor organizational performance against financial goals and key performance indicators.
- Evaluate new business opportunities, service lines, acquisitions, and expansion initiatives.
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Oversee all accounting operations, including:
- General Ledger
- Accounts Payable
- Accounts Receivable
- Payroll
- Fixed Assets
- Financial Reporting
- Ensure timely and accurate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
- Maintain compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Oversee annual audits and preparation of required financial documentation.
- Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures.
Healthcare Reimbursement & Revenue Cycle Management
- Lead financial oversight of healthcare reimbursement programs and payer revenue performance.
- Analyze and monitor reimbursement trends from:
- Commercial insurance carriers
- Evaluate payer contracts and reimbursement methodologies.
- Monitor denial rates, collection performance, reimbursement accuracy, and net revenue realization.
- Partner with billing and revenue cycle teams to improve collections and reduce reimbursement leakage.
- Develop financial models related to reimbursement forecasting and payer mix analysis.
- Identify opportunities to maximize reimbursement and improve revenue cycle efficiency.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Direct annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes.
- Conduct variance analysis and recommend corrective actions.
- Develop financial projections and cash flow models.
- Monitor departmental spending and profitability metrics.
- Support leadership with workforce planning and compensation modeling.
Compliance, Internal Controls & Risk Management
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls and financial governance.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and healthcare-specific regulations.
- Coordinate tax filings, audits, and financial reviews.
- Manage relationships with external auditors, financial institutions, and advisors.
- Assess financial risks and implement mitigation strategies.
Cash Management & Operational Finance
- Oversee cash flow forecasting and working capital management.
- Monitor liquidity, banking relationships, and treasury functions.
- Analyze operational performance and identify opportunities for cost containment.
- Recommend process improvements and automation opportunities.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop finance and accounting staff.
- Establish performance expectations and accountability measures.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
- Collaborate with department leaders to support organizational objectives.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
- Master's Degree (MBA, MHA, or related discipline) preferred.
- CPA designation strongly preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 8–10 years of progressive finance and accounting experience.
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience managing finance and accounting teams.
- Healthcare industry experience required.
- Experience within physician practices, behavioral health organizations, ambulatory healthcare, or multi-site healthcare organizations strongly preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
- Demonstrated expertise in health insurance reimbursement methodologies, payer contracting, reimbursement analysis.
- Knowledge of commercial insurance, and value-based reimbursement models.
- Experience developing budgets, forecasts, and financial models.
- Strong analytical and financial planning skills.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools.
- Excellent communication and executive presentation skills.
- Ability to translate complex financial data into actionable business insights.
- Ability to build a revenue team from scratch.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA certification.
- Experience in behavioral health, mental health, or outpatient healthcare settings.
- Experience with healthcare EHR and practice management systems.
- Experience leading multi-location healthcare organizations.
- Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, or organizational growth initiatives.
- Familiarity with healthcare compliance regulations and reimbursement audits.
