About the Role

Position is primarily responsible for designing a program that will enhance creativity within the individual, provide opportunities for developing a sense of self-confidence, and encourage meaningful socialization.  The position requires  an implementation of creative programming for residents by offering classes and workshops in fine arts, crafts, humanities, and other artistic expression, providing an atmosphere for growth and appreciation of the arts as a means of self-expression.

  • Provides direction, leadership and encouragement to foster quality creative arts programming for Residential and Assisted Living areas.   

  • Develops, coordinates, and conducts a therapeutic program of daily classes in artistic expression, including painting, drawing, pottery/clay and crafts.  Within the creative arts, provides benefit and meaning to the largest number of residents possible, reaching residents at differing levels of interest and ability. 

  • Develops, adapts and conducts a variety of group art activities for AL and HC residents. These programs will be coordinated with the Therapeutic Recreation team of these units at least one month prior to implementation. The program should include assisting residents in participating at all levels of functioning and should be adapted to those with visual, hearing, physical, mental and/or cognitive impairments. 

  • Plans and coordinates a variety of exhibitions, art displays, and collections from internal and external community artists.  Keeps in regular contact with community art guilds and galleries to attract local artists for exhibitions. 

  • Plans and coordinates all art display/exhibitions - both internal and external artists includes assisting each artist with display set up, providing signage for each piece of art and assists the taking down of all displays. Consideration will be given for providing an opening celebration for each artist. 

  • Plans and coordinates, with a resident committee, the Annual Arts Festival.  

 
  • Develops and implements programs specific to residents’ interests of artistic expression and humanities that may include dance, drama, creative writing, gallery visits, and artistic films, and lectures.  Continually surveys art publications, art shows, museum exhibitions, and catalogues for new opportunities for artistic expression. 

  • Orients and supervises volunteers by providing direction, instruction and encouragement. 

  • Monitors art supplies for adequate availability; keeps art supplies organized in an efficient and accessible manner;   Researches appropriate art materials and purchases what is needed for upcoming programs. 

  • Maintains an inventory of all art-related equipment. Schedules routine maintenance and assures that all equipment functions appropriately. Offers recommendations for replacement of old and the purchase of new equipment. 

  • Assures the Art Centers cleanliness is maintained on a weekly basis. This should include, but is not limited to: table tops, sink, counter tops, floor, shelves, and trash removal. 

  • Develops a monthly calendar, writes weekly newsletter articles, communicates planning and changes in program, and provides correspondence when needed. 

  • Develops new skills and maintains current skill levels by attending college-level and adult education classes, art guild demonstrations and seminars that promote artistic growth. 

  • Coordinates the process of planned programs which include but are not limited to: collecting payments and /or billing resident accounts; arranging transportation for trips; arranges for the purchase of tickets for trips if needed; escorts residents on trips if needed; provides sign-up sheets; develops trip lists; communicates trips with front desk, clinic and department director; and writes thank you letters as needed. 

  • Solicits and responds to residents’ requests for activities, workshops, and special classes. 

  • Develops and submits a proposed budget for the overall art and events programming; monitors expenditures for compliance with budgetary guidelines. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in art, art therapy, or related discipline from an accredited college, university, or art institute with additional training in advanced art, humanities, or related discipline preferred. 

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in conducting artistic classes, workshops, and/or programs required. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. 

  • Must have computer skills in basic word processing. 

  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with others.
