Join Harambee as a Mid-Level Product and Service Designer!

Are you passionate about using design to create real impact? Do you enjoy solving meaningful problems through human-centred thinking, while growing your craft in a collaborative, purpose-driven environment? If so, Harambee could be the place for you.

We’re not your typical organisation. At Harambee, we’re dedicated to solving youth unemployment through innovative partnerships and data-driven solutions. Our work is fast-paced, collaborative, and grounded in a deep belief that every young person deserves access to opportunity.

The Role

At Harambee, design is a tool for impact. The Mid-Level Product and Service Designer contributes to shaping the experiences of the young people and employers we serve — creating user-centred, thoughtful, and visually compelling products and services. Working closely with senior designers and cross-functional teams, this role translates insights and requirements into practical design solutions that support Harambee’s mission.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with stakeholders, young people, and employers to improve products and services
  • Design solutions that increase access to opportunities for young people
  • Contribute to seamless experiences across user journeys
  • Develop personas, journeys, wireframes, and prototypes
  • Test and iterate designs based on user feedback
  • Collaborate with analysts and developers on requirements
  • Maintain design standards and best practices
  • Support senior designers on larger initiatives
  • Stay current with design trends and tools

How You'll Work

  • Conduct user research and engage with stakeholders to inform design decisions
  • Collaborate to define and refine product and service requirements
  • Understand relevant tools and systems to inform practical design solutions
  • Synthesize research and data into actionable design artefacts
  • Track design success through metrics and iterate to improve outcomes
  • Contribute to maintaining and enhancing products and services
  • Plan and take ownership of design tasks within projects
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Communicate design ideas and decisions clearly to stakeholders
  • Manage delivery and stay accountable for progress
  • Continuously grow your design craft and stay updated with best practices
  • Create wireframes, prototypes, and components aligned to design systems

What we're looking for

We’re looking for someone who is excited about using design to create meaningful impact — someone who is thoughtful, curious, and committed to growing their craft while contributing to something bigger than themselves.

Must Haves

  • A recognized tertiary qualification in either: Design, User Experience (UX), Informatics, Web, Product, Visual, Multimedia or a related field.
  • 3+ years of work experience in an agile product design environment, responsible for the creation of a range of design artifacts.
  • Proven track record of exceptional quality delivery and cross-team collaboration.
  • Knowledge in human-centered design, iterative design or other problem-solving methodologies.
  • Proficiency in design systems, using tools such as Figma and Miro, and applying AI-supported workflows for design, ideation, and effective stakeholder and developer collaboration and handover.

Nice To Haves

Experience or exposure to the following tools, platforms, or contexts is beneficial, though not mandatory:

  • Canva, including the creation and maintenance of templates
  • Analytics and reporting tools such as Looker, Looker Studio, and Power BI
  • Marketing and communication platforms, including HubSpot and SendGrid
  • Content Management Systems (CMSs) and website builders such as Webflow
  • React-based web applications
  • Operational platforms, for example call centre management tools such as Genesys

Who You Are

You’re someone who cares about the impact of your work and takes pride in creating experiences that truly make a difference. You bring a thoughtful, collaborative approach to your work and are motivated by being part of something bigger than yourself.

  • You’re passionate about Harambee’s mission and the role design can play in shaping better outcomes for young people
  • You care about creating inclusive, accessible digital experiences that can scale and reach more people
  • You’re naturally curious and open to learning — you ask questions, seek feedback, and continuously look for ways to improve
  • You enjoy working with others and value collaboration across different perspectives and disciplines
  • You bring a strong sense of ownership to your work, balancing attention to detail with the ability to move forward and iterate
  • You embrace change and are comfortable working in an environment that is evolving and growing

Why Join Us

At Harambee, your work matters — not just to the organisation, but to the lives of the young people we serve.

  • Real Impact: Every design decision you make contributes to helping young people access learning and earning opportunities.
  • Growth: You’ll continue to develop your craft alongside experienced designers in a supportive, learning-focused environment.
  • Collaboration: Work with passionate, purpose-driven teams who care deeply about solving complex challenges together.
  • Purpose: Be part of a mission-led organisation creating meaningful, long-term change in South Africa.
  • Inclusive Environment: We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and able to contribute.
  • Accessibility: We strongly encourage applications from people living with disabilities and are committed to providing an accessible and supportive recruitment process.
