Haverford Township Parks & Recreation Department has nature-based camps designed to introduce children to the wonders of the outdoors and to help them make connections with nature and with new friends. Campers will explore many aspects of the Haverford Reserve, a 125-acre passive recreational space including two first-order streams, a bird blind, a storm water basin, native meadow, and so much more. Staff will help youth develop life skills such as conflict resolution, decision-making, and confidence. Staff will lead campers on a new adventure every day as they explore the stream, make crafts, roam in the meadow, hike in the woods, find frogs, turtles and aquatic bugs, and play outdoors.

This role requires strong leadership, enthusiasm, and is passionate about working with kids. Summer camp lead counselors are responsible for planning and leading activities and games for children ages 6-8. The lead counselor is also responsible for managing a staff of 2-3 people. The junior and senior counselors will follow the schedule provided and supervise games and activities under the direction of the lead.

 

Location:

The program will be based at the Haverford Community Recreation and Environmental Center (CREC) located at 9000 Parkview Drive, Haverford, PA 19041.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Strong ability to motivate, engage, and energize campers
  • Experience working with elementary students
  • Education background is preferred, but not required
  • Must be organized and have strong planning skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • CPR & First Aid Certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)
  • Must pass background clearances

 

Supervision Received: Site Leaders report directly to the summer supervisor of Parks and Recreation.  Some assignments may be conducted under general supervision.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise a group of up to 20 campers in daily activities
  • Plan and implement 6 weeks of engaging summer camp nature themes
  • Oversee the supplies needed for camp activities associated with camp themes
  • Supervise 2-3 camp counselors, ensuring smooth program operations
  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment where all campers feel safe, supported, and inspired
  • Communicate effectively with camp counselors, parents, and the Program Coordinator
  • Always ensure the safety and well-being of campers
  • Organizing groups and instructing recreation activities for campers.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations and outdoor safety concerns

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Active, outdoor-based role requiring regular movement, and physical engagement
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, rain, and natural elements
  • Requires bending, kneeling, lifting, reaching, and carrying equipment
