~1 min readThe Engine Service Tech 1 troubleshoots mechanical problems in Caterpillar and allied products. With supervision, performs duties as assigned by management in the repair, maintenance and/or rebuilding of equipment in the service shop or field, in a safe, efficient and capable manner in the least amount of labor hours necessary and without re-work. Besides performing mechanical repair as directed, this position also estimates work orders and prepares written quotes for submission to the Lead Person and/or Service Supervisor.
- Troubleshoots all Caterpillar and related systems.
- Uses all test and diagnostic equipment available to make adjustments to truck engines and systems.
- Makes warranty recommendations.
- Performs minor welding, fabrication, plumbing alignment and D.C. electric repairs.
- Guides/supervises lower-level technicians in the repairs of trucks and Caterpillar engines.
- Performs other duties as directed by foreman or service manager.
- Must have a valid Class C Drivers License with a clean driving record.
- Must have a valid California Class “B” driver’s license, if assigned vehicle requires.
- Zero to three (0 to 3) years of experience in the repair of on-highway trucks and buses.
- Expertise in all phases of on-highway truck service operation.
- Full and positive knowledge of the Caterpillar product line and allied products.
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent or can provide verification of all formal classroom study or hands on experience related to heavy equipment repairs.
- Furnish all hand tools required to repair, test and diagnose hydraulic, air, power train, electrical, and electronic systems on all makes of trucks and Caterpillar engines.
NOTE: Some high dollar value tooling is supplied by Hawthorne Machinery Co.
- Walking and moving about on foot often through uneven terrain.
- Hands/arms operating equipment, hand and power tools.
- Handling: Works with hands.
- Lifting: Raises or lowers miscellaneous equipment parts and tools. Lifts up to 50 lbs. with frequent exertion
- Reaching: Extends hands and arms in any direction.
- Stooping: Bends body downward and forward by bending at knees or waist.
- Standing: Remains in standing position if required for certain repair or maintenance work.
- Climbing: In and out of equipment.
- Vision: Reads work tickets, parts and service books and operate heavy equipment.
- Talking: Communicates via telecommunications and in person.
- Hearing: Hears well enough to discern mechanical problems for safety in and around shop and construction sites and to receive communication via telecommunications and in person.
- Sitting: Sits in equipment and vehicles.
- Lying: Lies in prone position under vehicles and equipment.
- Noise: Works in conditions with constant or intermittent noise.
- Temperatures/Weather: Works outside and in shop with variations of temperature and weather.
- Exposure: Foul odors, fumes and harsh substances.
