The Times Union, an award-winning daily news organization based in New York’s Capital Region, seeks an enterprising, digitally savvy and endlessly curious news reporter to cover the Schenectady County geographical beat. This position requires the ability to juggle competing priorities and a wide range of topics: municipal governments, court cases, law enforcement issues, local communities and personalities, and more.

Responsibilities

  1. Bring energy and enthusiasm to looking beyond the surface to break news and tell impactful stories;
  2. Produce daily and longer-term enterprise content — including features as well as data-driven investigative pieces — for use across multiple platforms with a digital-first mindset;
  3. Create photos, videos, social media posts as essential elements of  multi-dimensional storytelling;
  4. Work collaboratively and collegially with reporters, photographers, editors and producers, and approach the use of new technology such as AI tools in responsible and creative ways.
     

Requirements

  • Minimum of three years working as a daily news reporter;
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, history, political science or equivalent experience preferred;
  • Strong, clear, accurate writing ability that demonstrates attention to detail and grammar;
  • Strong news judgment;
  • Ability to confront officials, handle difficult conversations and hold people accountable;
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in New York State. The reasonable estimate, if hired in New York State, is $56K-$66K. Please note this information is specific to those hired in New York State. If this role is open to candidates outside of New York State, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
