Position: Research Assistant and Technician
The successful candidate will report to Dr. Gustavo Ybazeta at Health Sciences North Research Institute and will work closely with the laboratory manager to support the day-to-day laboratory operations of a wastewater surveillance research program.
The successful candidate will assist with the receipt, organization, and curation of clinical and wastewater samples collected from multiple wastewater facilities. Duties will include receiving and shipping samples according to established protocols; conducting DNA and RNA extractions from complex matrices (wastewater, feces, blood, and others); performing RT-qPCR and PCR-based assays for detection and characterization; assisting with metadata curation; and entering study data into a network system.
Applicants must have a minimum of a Diploma in a relevant field such as Biotechnology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline..
The ideal candidate will have experience with DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR, PCR, and/or sequencing methodologies, and basic laboratory data analysis. Knowledge of viral and microbial culture techniques for biosafety level 2 microorganisms is an asset. Strong oral and written English communication skills are required. The successful candidate must be able to work independently, follow established protocols, maintain accurate records, and contribute effectively to a research team.
We are looking for a motivated, reliable, detail-oriented team player with strong laboratory skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
This job is typically a 37.5-hour work week. Evening and weekend scheduling may be required based on project requirements. The candidate should be able to lift 23kg/50lbs.
The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This contract is a one-year contract with the possibility of extension.
