JOB SUMMARY:

The Cook/Driver is a vital team member responsible for preparing and delivering nutritious meals to senior center participants, including homebound individuals. This role involves cooking meals in a timely and sanitary manner and delivering them safely and respectfully along designated routes.

In the kitchen, the Cook/Driver follows standardized recipes to ensure meals meet nutritional standards. Responsibilities include maintaining kitchen cleanliness, adhering to food safety protocols, and assisting with food storage and inventory.

As a driver, the Cook/Driver transports meals, conducts wellness checks on clients, and ensures safe delivery. Maintaining vehicle safety and following driving regulations is also required.

The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, follow directions well, maintain a professional appearance, and be dedicated to serving elders. Adherence to hygiene, dress code, and safety protocols is essential, as this position supports both the nutritional and social well-being of the community’s senior population.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The Cook/Driver works directly under the supervision of the Lead Cook.


ESSENTIONAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares, cooks, and serves meals in accordance with standardized recipes and menus.
  • Ensures food is prepared in a sanitary and timely manner to meet scheduled meal times.
  • Follows proper food handling procedures, including storage, labeling, and temperature control.
  • Cleans and maintains kitchen equipment and work areas according to safety and sanitation standards.
  • Assists with receiving and storing food and supply deliveries.
  • Maintains daily food temperature logs and production records as required.
  • Prepares meals for both congregate dining and home-delivered meal clients.
  • Ensures all meals are visually appealing and meet nutritional standards.
  • Works cooperatively with kitchen team to ensure efficiency and quality control.
  • Delivers meals to home-bound elders using a program vehicle on assigned routes.
  • Loads, transports, and unloads meals, ensuring temperature and food safety during delivery.
  • Conducts wellness checks on meal recipients and reports concerns to appropriate staff.
  • Maintains accurate delivery records and logs mileage as required.
  • Ensures vehicle is clean, fueled, and maintained in safe operating condition.
  • Follows traffic laws and demonstrates safe driving practices at all times.
  • Assists seniors as needed when delivering meals, including minor mobility support.
  • Provides courteous and respectful service to all elders and staff.
  • Adheres to dress code and hygiene standards, including good personal hygiene, proper hair covering, closed-toe and rubber-soled shoes, short or clean fingernails, limited jewelry, and no shorts or cut-off clothing.
  • Demonstrates the ability to take direction and respond positively to supervision and feedback.
  • Assists with special events or senior center activities as needed.
  • Participates in required training related to food safety, elder care, and vehicle operation.
  • Reports equipment or safety issues promptly to the supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in food preparation or institutional cooking.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Arizona State Fingerprint Clearance Card (or ability to obtain upon hire).
  • Must pass background check, drug screening, and any other pre-employment requirements.
  • Submit to and Pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Food Handler’s Certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
  • CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Experience working with elders or in a senior nutrition program.
  • Familiarity with tribal communities or senior services preferred.
  • Knowledge of safe food handling and kitchen sanitation practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially in working with elderly individuals.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

May require frequent standing, walking, stooping, reaching, pushing, and pulling. Lifts heavy pans, trays, and pushes food carts. May lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
