Intern Researcher - Human-AI Experience Design
Quick Summary
Huawei Canada has an immediate internship opening for a Researcher. About the team: The Huawei Human-Machine Interaction Lab unites global researchers, engineers,
The Huawei Human-Machine Interaction Lab unites global researchers, engineers, and designers to redefine human technology relationships through user centered, hands on research. We focus on agentic AI and multimodal interaction (voice, touch, vision, gesture) across smartphones, wearables, and emerging devices—advancing agentic workflows, multi-agent orchestration, and intuitive human-AI interfaces. By tightly integrating sensing, algorithms, and systems, our prototype driven work ships directly to products, enabling seamless task delegation and human AI collaboration at scale.
About the Role
~2 min readExplore and design next-generation human-AI interaction experiences, with a focus on agentic AI, multimodal interaction, and emerging intelligent devices.
Design novel interaction paradigms for AI-native products, including conversational interfaces, AI copilots, proactive assistants, multimodal task delegation, cross-device experiences, and human-AI collaboration workflows.
Translate complex AI capabilities into intuitive, controllable, and delightful user experiences through interaction flows, information architecture, and experience frameworks.
Create rapid prototypes and interactive concepts using tools such as Figma, ProtoPie, Framer, and emerging AI prototyping platforms to validate future interaction concepts.
Collaborate with team to explore new interaction models, user scenarios, and product opportunities for intelligent systems.
Participate in user-centered design activities, including concept validation, usability evaluation, Wizard-of-Oz studies, user interviews, and experience benchmarking.
Explore how users express intent, delegate tasks, maintain control, build trust, and collaborate with AI systems across voice, touch, visual, gesture, and context-aware interactions.
Contribute to the development of interaction patterns, design principles, journey maps, experience frameworks, and future product visions for agentic and multimodal experiences.
Stay current with emerging trends in human-AI interaction, agentic AI, multimodal interfaces, and future computing paradigms, translating new technologies into practical interaction opportunities and prototype experiences.
The total target annual compensation (based on 2,080 hours per year) ranges from $58,000 to $104,000 depending on education, experience, and demonstrated expertise.
Currently pursuing a Master or PhD degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Product Design, Industrial Design, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Information Science, Design Research, or a related field.
Strong interest in one or more of the following areas: Human-AI Interaction, Agentic AI, Multimodal Interaction, AI-native User Experience, Conversational Interfaces, Wearable Computing, or Future Computing Experiences.
Demonstrated ability to design user experiences and interaction flows for complex systems through academic projects, internships, research, or personal work.
Ability to rapidly prototype, iterate, and communicate interaction concepts through visual storytelling and interactive experiences.
Strong understanding of interaction design principles, user-centered design methodologies, information architecture, and experience design frameworks.
Interest in AI technologies, including LLMs, multimodal models, AI agents, conversational systems, and emerging human-AI interaction paradigms.
Excellent communication, storytelling, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across research, design, engineering, and product teams.
