The Crisis, Conflict and Arms Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative assistance and support to its Arms Program. The Arms Program documents the negative impacts of the use of weapons and promotes the establishment and implementation of international treaties and legal norms. It currently focuses on autonomous weapons systems and other uses of Artificial Intelligence in the military domain, cluster munitions, incendiary weapons, landmines, and the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.

This full-time position reports to the Division’s Deputy Director (based in London) and will be based within commuting distance of one of the following HRW offices: New York, Washington DC, London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Stockholm, or Berlin.  The successful candidate will be encouraged to work from the office 2-3 days per week.

Responsibilities

  1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
  2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required. Proficiency in another language such as Arabic, Russian, French, Spanish or Chinese is highly preferred.
  3. Demonstrated interest in human rights is required.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills, timeliness, and ability to work well under pressure while managing multiple priorities are required.
  5. Good problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions are required.
  6. Self-motivation and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision are required.
  7. Proficiency in computer packages, including MS Office applications, is required.
  8. Previous experience with or knowledge of the Stop Killer Robots campaign, International Campaign to Ban Landmines, Cluster Munition Coalition, International Network on Explosive Weapons, or other humanitarian disarmament work is desired but not required.

Salary and Benefits: Rights Watch offers competitive salaries and comprehensive employer-paid benefits. If based in the United States, the salary range for this position will be USD 60,001 – 64,328.
