The Infusion Pharmacy Technician supports the preparation, dispensing, and distribution of sterile medications for oncology and infusion patients at Simon Cancer Center at University Hospital. Working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, this role plays a critical part in delivering safe, timely, and high‑quality cancer care within IU Health’s academic medical center environment.

This position requires strong attention to detail, comfort working in a USP <797>/<800>–compliant cleanroom, and the ability to function effectively in a fast‑paced oncology infusion setting.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and compound hazardous and non‑hazardous sterile medications, including chemotherapy, biologics, and supportive care infusions, in compliance with USP <797>, <800>, and IU Health policies.
  • Perform accurate dose calculations, measurements, labeling, and documentation under pharmacist supervision.
  • Maintain aseptic technique while working in cleanroom environments (ISO Class 5/7/8).

 

  • Manage inventory for infusion pharmacy areas, including receiving, stocking, rotating, and removing expired medications.
  • Assist with ordering and maintaining adequate par levels for infusion medications and supplies.
  • Support waste documentation, controlled substances handling, and hazardous drug disposal processes.

 

  • Ensure timely delivery of prepared medications to infusion clinics and treatment areas.
  • Communicate effectively with pharmacists, nurses, and other care team members regarding medication readiness and workflow status.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, safety reporting, and compliance audits as needed.

 

  • Adhere strictly to infection control, hazardous drug handling, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Maintain required certifications and licensure per state regulation and IU Health policy.
  • Support Primary Source Verification (PSV) and ongoing competency assessments.

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Indiana Pharmacy Technician license 
  • National pharmacy technician certification (PTCB or NHA) required within 1 year of employment
  • Ability to work in a sterile compounding and hazardous drug environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.

 

Nice to Have

  • Previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician in an inpatient, infusion, or oncology setting is preferred.
  • Experience with sterile compounding and chemotherapy preparation.
  • Familiarity with USP <797> and <800> standards.
  • Experience working within an academic medical center or health system.

 

Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity for compounding and handling sterile products.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Willingness to wear PPE, including gowns, gloves, respirators, and eye protection as required.

 

  • Location: Simon Cancer Center – University Hospital, Indianapolis, IN
  • Schedule: Day shift 8am – 4:30pm with one shift per week covering closing duties with a schedule of 9am – 5:30pm. Also potential coverage at offsite satellite locations for PTO/call-ins.
