The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor for Medical Management is responsible for leading a team of pharmacy technicians supporting prior authorization (PA) workflows. This role ensures efficient, compliant, and timely processing of medication authorization requests while driving operational excellence, team development, and high-quality service for patients, providers, and payers.

Hours are Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5pm and will be a hybrid position once team member is fully trained.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, coach, and support pharmacy technicians handling prior authorization requests
  • Monitor daily workflows, productivity, and accuracy to ensure service level targets are met
  • Provide real-time problem-solving support for escalations and complex cases
  • Assist with staffing plans, scheduling, and workload distribution
  • Ensure accurate and timely submission and follow-up of prior authorizations
  • Oversee documentation, payer communication, and compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Identify and resolve barriers impacting authorization turnaround times
  • Partner with pharmacists and providers to optimize approval outcomes
  • Track and report on key performance metrics (turnaround time, approval rates, productivity, quality)
  • Conduct audits and implement continuous quality improvement initiatives
  • Ensure adherence to IU Health policies, SOPs, and payer guidelines
  • Onboard and train new pharmacy technicians on PA processes and systems
  • Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and performance evaluations
  • Support professional development and skill-building initiatives
  • Serve as a liaison between pharmacy, providers, payers, and internal stakeholders
  • Communicate process updates, regulatory changes, and system enhancements
  • Partner with leadership to drive workflow improvements and system alignment

Requirements

  • Requires previous supervisory/leadership experience
  • Requires the absence of criminal history related to the ability to work with drugs
  • Requires strong mathematical calculation skills
  • Requires Pharmacy Technician experience and active Indiana Pharmacy Technician License
  • Requires knowledge of pharmacy and hospital computer systems and computer-assisted devices
  • Requires strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Requires strong customer service skills
  • Requires full proficiency typing and using Microsoft Office applications
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Associate degree or equivalent experience preferred
  • Requires Pharmacy Technician National Certification
  • Active Indiana Pharmacy Technician license (or eligible upon hire)
  • National certification (CPhT) required

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with payer requirements, formularies, and utilization management
  • Experience with EMR systems (e.g., Epic) and pharmacy/PA platforms
  • Strong leadership and team-building abilities
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
  • Primarily onsite at the IU Health ISC in Plainfield, IN
  • Office-based setting supporting system-wide prior authorization operations
