POSITION OVERVIEW
IslandWood’s Urban School Programs engage students in their home environments and dig deep into how built and natural systems work in tandem. Our programs seek to cultivate understanding of the complexity of urban systems to give learners the tools to generate solutions that lead to resilient, healthy, and thriving communities.
Programs will be delivered at the Brightwater Education Center, in public parks in Seattle, along the Duwamish River, at the South Treatment Plant in Renton, and at schools throughout the region. Urban School Program Educators teach set curricula to 3rd-6th grade students in King and Snohomish Counties. Urban School Program Educators may engage in partner teaching, collaborating, and problem solving to ensure that school groups receive a high-quality, grade-appropriate program that attends to their learning needs.
This position is intentionally designed to offer space to grow as an educator through debriefing, scheduled professional development, staff observations, and feedback from a community of educators.
Job Title: Urban Programs Educator
Reports to: Urban School and Community Education Manager
Classification: Part-time/Seasonal, Hourly/Non-Exempt
Pay Rate: $23.98/hour
Work Schedule: Varied, predominantly weekdays during school hours
Assignment Date: September 21, 2026 thru June 2027
Work Location: Remote, specific work location varies depending on school/program
(Only candidates within the Greater Seattle area will be considered. No out of state candidates)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:
- Provide high quality, culturally responsive instruction for 3rd – 6th grade students in multiple settings including schoolyards, local parks, and King County wastewater treatment facilities
- Participate in training and team meetings
- Provide timely and professional communication with program staff
- Participate in program debriefs and assessments
- Show commitment to learning and growing through feedback in an active learning community
- Demonstrate commitment to IslandWood’s work towards equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and in our educational programming
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 1 year of experience teaching elementary and/or middle school youth
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in education, environmental education, or related field
- Experience successfully engaging youth across cultural and racial boundaries and learning styles
- Confidence teaching and managing groups of students in various settings, including outdoors
- Desire to learn and teach about how urban environmental systems and communities intersect
- Ability to respond professionally to a variety of situations that may arise quickly
- IslandWood may consider an equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education, and experience to meet minimum qualifications.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- First Aid and CPR certification (by start date)

- Must be able to comply with and maintain a drug-free work environment
- Must pass child safety screening procedure, post-offer
- Driver’s license and access to vehicle is desirable
- Must complete WA Reporting requirements
