Job Overview
The Manual Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating a variety of conventional machine tools to produce precision parts that meet customer specifications. This role requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently on a wide range of machining projects.
Machinists interpret blueprints and technical drawings, select appropriate materials, plan machining processes, and perform all necessary operations to complete parts accurately and efficiently. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to quality workmanship.
Key Responsibilities
Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and part specifications
Select materials and determine machining methods and sequences
Set up and operate manual lathes, milling machines, and other shop equipment
Perform precision machining to tight tolerances (up to .0001”)
Install and secure vises, fixtures, jigs, and workpieces using hoists as needed
Operate machine controls to remove material according to specifications
Use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, gauges) to verify accuracy
Monitor machine operation, including lubrication levels, and perform basic maintenance
Maintain a clean and organized work area throughout the shift and at shift end
Identify different types of metals and materials used in machining
Interpret CAD drawings and create basic part sketches when needed
Lathe Operations
Workholding and setup, including 4-jaw chuck operation
Tool selection, sharpening, and setup
Determine cutting speeds and feed rates
Perform precision turning and threading operations
Milling Operations
Setup and operation of mills, attachments, cutters, and tool holders
Calculate and apply appropriate RPMs and feed rates
Perform operations including:
Squaring and surfacing parts
Milling grooves and slots
Drilling, tapping, and boring
Using dividing/indexing heads
Machining angles and complex features
Qualifications
Prior experience operating manual lathes and/or milling machines preferred but not required
Proficiency with precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, T-gauges)
Ability to operate shop equipment such as band saws, bench sanders, and disc sanders
Basic knowledge of math, geometry, and trigonometry
Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift, push, pull, and move materials up to 50 lbs.
Ability to stand and/or walk for 8–10-hour shifts
Frequent use of hands and tools for extended periods

Schedule
Monday – Friday, 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM
Overtime available

Starting $22.00 + more based on experience
