RTI’s Center for Data Interoperability is seeking a bachelor’s-level Spatial Epidemiologist with experience in geographic and spatial analyses focused on place-based health factors. The Center conducts contract and grant funded work in chronic and infectious disease, public health, community vulnerability, environmental health risks, and more. The successful applicant will play a role in the application of a variety of geographic, epidemiologic, economic, and health policy research methods in support of projects that engage with substance use disorder, environmental health risks and hazards, and spatial methodologies. Responsibilities

  • Compile and analyze data from the U.S. Census Bureau, including the American Community Survey and Public Use Microdata Sample.
  • Code, clean, and manage datasets using statistical software, including R and Python.
  • Support analyses of spatial data, including creating, cleaning and maintaining data in a geographic information system (GIS), and implementing spatial analyses and modeling.
  • Implement statistical models to perform econometric, epidemiological, and statistical analyses under the direction of senior staff.
  • Prepare data visualizations including maps, tables, dashboards, and charts; write sections of reports.
  • Review the health, geographic, economic, and social science literatures to identify specific findings.
  • Assist in the creation of scientific publications and technical reports by providing research support for senior staff.
  • Compile meeting notes and manage basic project correspondence.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Geography, Epidemiology, Public Health, Economics, Statistics, Computer Science or other quantitative health, public policy, or social science field required. May 2026 graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Quantitative research experience or course work in applied geography, epidemiology, economics, or other quantitative health, public policy, or social science field required; research experience using spatial data or spatial statistics is a plus; research experience using real-world data, such as administrative medical claims data is a plus.
  • Knowledge and understanding of GIS data management and analysis functions is required.
  • Proficiency in R is required; proficiency in other statistical or programming languages such as Python or Stata is a plus; an original R code sample will be requested.
  • Proficiency in ESRI ArcMap or ArcPro.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
  • Exemplary oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; a writing sample will be requested.
  • Ability to manage tasks for multiple project directors simultaneously.

Our pay ranges represent national averages and may vary by location as a geographic differential may be applied to some locations within the United States. RTI considers multiple factors when making an offer including, for example: established salary range, internal budget, business needs, and education and years of work experience possessed by the applicant.
