Hiring one (1) position
A Probationary Firefighter performs skilled and physically demanding work of a hazardous nature under emergency conditions. Duties include firefighting, rescue operations, and first aid, as well as responding to a wide range of emergency situations involving risk to life and property. The role also involves participation in fire prevention, public education, and inspection activities, along with regular in-service training. Probationary Firefighters carry out routine maintenance of fire stations, vehicles, and equipment, and typically work under the supervision of senior officers; however, they may be required to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
Qualifications:
- Must possess a grade 12 diploma or equivalent
- Completion of NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 1 and 2 Certification
- Class “DZ” Ontario Driver’s License, with acceptable drivers abstract
- Must be in good physical condition and must pass a medical
- Mental alertness, mechanical aptitude, ability to get along well with others and work as a team player
- Must participate in all in-service and specialized training as offered
- Ability to follow, and communicate effectively written and oral instructions
- Ability to deal effectively with the public in a variety of situations.
- Valid and current First Aid and CPR certificate considered an asset
Duties and responsibilities but not limited to:
- Performs fire ground and rescue operations - as a member of a shift or platoon
- Responds to emergency calls, lays and connects hose, holds nozzles and directs water streams, raises and climbs ladders, uses extinguishers and other equipment; ventilates buildings to release heat, smoke and gases
- Performs emergency patient care and firefighter safety practices - removes persons from danger and administers first aid to injured persons
- Operates and maintains fire apparatus and equipment; as assigned, drives and operates firefighting apparatus; performs varied maintenance tasks on apparatus, equipment and facilities when assigned to fire prevention work
- Participates in fire safety inspections; performs inspections and assessments related to fire prevention duties
