KLS Earthworks & Environmental is seeking an Apprentice Heavy Equipment Technician to join our Calgary-based team. This role is an addition to our strong maintenance group and plays a key part in keeping our on-road fleet operating safely, efficiently, and at peak performance.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist with troubleshooting and inspecting trucks, trailers, and fleet equipment to identify faults, malfunctions, and maintenance requirements.
  • Support Journeyperson Technicians in diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and air brake system issues using diagnostic software and testing equipment.
  • Assist in adjusting equipment and repairing or replacing worn or defective parts under supervision.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, work orders, and repair documentation.
  • Participate in testing repaired vehicles and equipment to verify proper operation and ensure repairs meet manufacturer and company standards.
  • Perform cleaning, lubrication, greasing, and other preventative maintenance tasks on fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist with repair and maintenance work on gravel trucks, truck and pup combinations, trailers, service trucks, and other commercial vehicles.
  • Complete routine maintenance services including oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, tire inspections, brake inspections, and hydraulic hose replacement.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area while following company safety policies and industry best practices.
  • Continuously develop technical skills and knowledge through on-the-job training and apprenticeship program requirements.

Qualifications

  • Registered Apprentice Heavy Equipment Technician (2nd, 3rd, or 4th Year)
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License; Class 1 or Class 3 License considered an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of diesel engines, air brake systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and commercial vehicle maintenance.
  • Previous experience working with heavy trucks, trailers, construction equipment, automotive repair, or agricultural equipment is considered an asset.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with a willingness to learn diagnostic and repair procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, parts diagrams, and repair procedures.
  • Capable of lifting to 50 lbs and performing physically demanding work in both shop and field environments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and safe work practices.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or respond to breakdowns when required.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the shop or designated work location.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and eagerness to develop a long-term career in the heavy equipment industry.
  • CVIP certification or air brake endorsement considered an asset but not required.
