Your future position
 
As a Junior IUU Fishing Analyst, you will support expanding  Kpler’s maritime risk capability through specialist analysis focused on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. You will help transform maritime datasets, behavioural indicators, and emerging algorithmic outputs into practical intelligence products, internal support, and client-facing insights. This role is designed to strengthen Kpler’s specialist coverage in maritime intelligence and support the integration of compliance and maritime risk analysis. This is consistent with the team’s wider strategy to integrate maritime intelligence with compliance insights and your documented internal discussions on using Research Labs fishing algorithms to develop an IUU-focused reporting stream.
  • Monitor and analyse vessel behaviour and fisheries-related maritime activity indicative of potential IUU fishing risk.

  • Support the development of draft reports, case studies, and recurring intelligence outputs focused on IUU fishing.

  • Work with internal datasets, algorithmic outputs, and behavioural indicators to identify suspicious or anomalous patterns.

  • Assist in validating and interpreting fisheries-related signals from maritime data sources.

  • Collaborate with Research / Data Science and product-related stakeholders to improve analytical methods and use cases.

  • Produce high-quality written outputs for internal teams, client support, and thought leadership.

  • Support commercial teams with specialist fisheries-related intelligence where relevant.

  • Track developments in fisheries monitoring, maritime enforcement, and related compliance risk themes.

  • Escalate higher-risk or ambiguous cases to senior analysts and contribute to continuous improvement of methodologies.

  • 2 years of experience in maritime analysis, fisheries monitoring, compliance, geospatial / intelligence analysis, or related fields

  • Strong research and analytical writing capability

  • Ability to work with large or complex datasets and detect behavioural patterns

  • Interest in maritime security, fisheries governance, or non-traditional maritime risk

  •  

  • Exposure to IUU fishing, fisheries control, maritime domain awareness, or vessel monitoring

  • Familiarity with AIS, satellite-derived signals, geospatial intelligence, or anomaly detection

  • Experience supporting reporting, intelligence products, or investigative workflows

  • Knowledge of licensing, transshipment, or fisheries compliance concepts

  • Strong analytical reasoning

  • Ability to interpret vessel behaviour and maritime patterns

  • Research and report-writing skills

  • Comfort working with data, spreadsheets, and structured research workflows

  • Ability to connect technical findings to practical business or compliance implications

  • Curiosity and investigative mindset

  • Attention to detail

  • Persistence and critical thinking

  • Collaboration across technical and non-technical teams

  • Clear communication

  • Adaptability in a developing workstream

  • Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Studies, Marine / Environmental Policy, Fisheries Management, International Relations, or another relevant field

  • Relevant internships or research projects in fisheries / maritime monitoring would be valuable
