Position Summary
The Crossing Guard, under the direction of the Borough Police Department, is responsible for safeguarding pedestrians—particularly school-aged children—at designated crossings and intersections. This position also supports traffic and pedestrian safety during community events, school functions, and other borough activities. The Crossing Guard serves as a visible representative of the Police Department and plays a key role in promoting public safety and community trust.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the safe crossing of students and pedestrians at assigned school crossings and intersections
- Control vehicular traffic using department-issued equipment (e.g., stop paddle, reflective vest) in accordance with traffic laws and departmental procedures
- Monitor traffic patterns and identify safe crossing intervals
- Provide a consistent, visible safety presence before, during, and after school hours
- Assist with traffic and pedestrian control at borough-sponsored events, parades, and community gatherings
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, motorists, and police personnel
- Observe and report unsafe conditions, suspicious activity, traffic violations, or incidents to the Police Department
- Maintain professionalism and adhere to all department policies, procedures, and chain of command
- Attend required safety training and briefings as directed by the Police Department
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Ability to understand and apply traffic control procedures and pedestrian safety practices
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly when working with children and the public
- Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and sound judgment
- Ability to follow direction and work under the supervision of police personnel
- Must be able to successfully pass a background check as required by the Borough Police Department
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and remain alert for extended periods
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow
- Sufficient vision and hearing to monitor traffic and respond to hazards
- Ability to lift and carry light safety equipment
Work Schedule
- Part-time; typically aligned with school arrival and dismissal times
- May include additional hours for early dismissals, school events, and borough-sponsored activities
- Schedule follows the local school calendar, with occasional assignments outside normal hours
Work Environment
- Outdoor roadway and intersection settings with exposure to moving traffic
- High-visibility public safety role requiring constant situational awareness
Additional Requirements
- Must wear department-issued uniform and safety gear at all times while on duty
- Must comply with all applicable local ordinances, state traffic laws, and Police Department directives
- Represents the Borough Police Department in a professional and courteous manner at all times
