Learning Mentor Apprenticeship at Chowbent Primary School


Chowbent Primary School is a one-form entry primary school committed to providing a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment where every child is encouraged to achieve their full potential academically, socially and emotionally.


We are looking for a caring, motivated and committed individual to join us as a Learning Mentor Apprentice. The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for supporting children’s wellbeing and development and will be eager to gain valuable experience working with pupils who require additional pastoral, emotional and behavioural support.


Apprenticeship Summary


  • Salary: £12,480 per year (based on £8.00 per hour)
    • Working Week: Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm (including 1-hour lunch break)
    • Hours: 30 hours per week
    • Apprenticeship Training: Online apprenticeship training supported by skilled tutors
    • Qualification: Level 5 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard
    • Location: Laburnum Street, Atherton, Manchester, M46 9FP

The Role


As a Learning Mentor Apprentice, you will work closely with pupils, staff and families to provide pastoral support and guidance, helping children overcome barriers to learning and achieve positive outcomes. You will support pupils on a one-to-one basis and in small groups, focusing on social, emotional and behavioural development, while contributing to a safe, supportive and inclusive school environment.


Main Duties

  • Support pupils on a one-to-one basis and in small groups to address social, emotional and behavioural needs
  • Assist in the implementation of the school’s pastoral care and guidance systems
  • Support the development and delivery of mentoring, behaviour and support plans
  • Help identify pupils who require additional support and intervention
  • Monitor and record pupil progress against agreed targets and action plans
  • Provide feedback and reports to staff as required
  • Liaise effectively with teachers, parents/carers and external agencies where appropriate
  • Support the implementation of safeguarding procedures and child protection processes
  • Assist in coordinating intervention programmes for vulnerable pupils
  • Support pupils who are not following a full timetable or require additional supervision
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation relating to pastoral support and safeguarding
  • Promote positive behaviour, attendance and engagement with learning
  • Contribute to a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions and professional development activities as required


The Candidate


The ideal candidate will be compassionate, patient and committed to supporting children’s wellbeing and personal development. They will demonstrate excellent communication skills, a positive attitude and the ability to build effective relationships with pupils, families and colleagues.


Skills and Experience


  • Level 3 Teaching Assistant Diploma (essential)
  • Experience of working with children or young people (essential)
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build positive relationships with pupils, staff and parents/carers
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to use initiative and respond appropriately to challenges
  • Good organisational and record-keeping skills
  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, safeguarding and child protection procedures
  • Knowledge of behaviour management approaches or willingness to develop these skills
  • Positive, patient and resilient approach to supporting young people
  • Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Willingness to undertake training and professional development


Qualifications


  • Level 3 Teaching Assistant Diploma
  • Minimum of 3 GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including English and Mathematics
  • Willingness to undertake further relevant training as required


Training and Development


As an apprentice, you will receive a combination of on-the-job training and formal learning, including:

  • Completion of the Level 5 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard
    • Regular mentoring and support from experienced school staff
    • Ongoing progress reviews and development meetings
    • Training in safeguarding, behaviour support, pastoral care and mentoring strategies
    • Opportunities to develop professional skills within an educational setting


What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end? The successful candidate will achieve a Level 5 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard qualification.


What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Potential full-time employment for the right candidate upon successful completion of the apprenticeship. This role may also provide progression opportunities into pastoral, safeguarding, inclusion or wider educational support roles.
