The Civil Superintendent is responsible for the overall planning, coordination, execution, and supervision of civil construction projects, including site development, earthwork, grading, excavation, underground utilities, drainage systems, concrete structures, and related infrastructure. This position provides direct leadership to field personnel, subcontractors, and equipment operators while ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with project specifications and quality standards.

The Civil Superintendent works closely with Project Managers, clients, engineers, and foremen to coordinate resources, monitor production, and drive project success from mobilization through completion.

Responsibilities

  • Read, interpret, and implement project drawings, specifications, contracts, and civil construction plans.
  • Direct and supervise daily field operations for civil construction projects.
  • Coordinate crews, subcontractors, equipment, materials, and vendors to ensure efficient project execution.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage three-week and six-week look-ahead schedules.
  • Monitor project production rates and implement corrective actions to maintain schedule and budget objectives.
  • Lead earthwork, grading, excavation, trenching, underground utility installation, storm drainage, paving preparation, and concrete activities.
  • Conduct site inspections to verify quality standards, project specifications, and safety requirements are being met.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations as well as company safety policies.
  • Lead daily planning meetings, safety meetings, and toolbox talks.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers on manpower forecasting, scheduling, procurement, and project reporting.
  • Support estimating and preconstruction efforts through constructability reviews, production analysis, equipment recommendations, and cost evaluations.
  • Monitor project costs and productivity while identifying opportunities for improved efficiency.
  • Train, mentor, and develop foremen, operators, and craft personnel.
  • Maintain positive relationships with customers, inspectors, utility providers, engineers, and other stakeholders.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to expand business relationships and generate future work.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of Superintendent experience managing civil construction projects.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in heavy civil, sitework, earthwork, utility, or infrastructure construction.
  • Proven experience leading multiple crews, subcontractors, and field personnel.
  • Strong knowledge of grading, excavation, trenching, underground utility installation, stormwater systems, and civil site development.
  • Experience coordinating heavy equipment including excavators, dozers, graders, loaders, compactors, and related construction equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil plans, profiles, specifications, and utility drawings.
  • Working knowledge of civil construction methods, means, and sequencing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and construction scheduling software.
  • OSHA 30 certification or equivalent safety training.
  • Trench Safety and Competent Person certification preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Knowledge of GPS machine control, survey layouts, and grade control systems.

  • Outdoor construction environments.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Active construction sites with heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Exposure to dust, mud, noise levels exceeding 85 decibels, and uneven terrain.
  • Frequent walking on construction sites.
  • Ability to enter excavations and trenches when required.
  • Climbing ladders, embankments, and construction equipment.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Operation of company vehicles when required.
  • Valid driver's license and proof of insurability required. All drivers are subject to DMV background record review.

This role requires compliance with all applicable safety regulations, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and Loenbro Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) policies.
