The Mechanical QCx Engineer – Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is responsible for ensuring the quality, compliance, and integrity of mechanical and piping installations throughout construction, testing, and commissioning activities. Working closely with Project Managers, Construction Managers, Superintendents, contractors, commissioning teams, and client representatives, this role will oversee mechanical quality assurance and quality control activities, ensuring all work complies with project specifications, applicable codes, and client quality standards. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting project delivery while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, documentation, and successful project turnover.
Responsibilities
~2 min read- →Develop and maintain the project-specific Mechanical QA/QC Plan in accordance with client specifications, ASME, AWS, and applicable local codes.
- →Review P&IDs, isometric drawings, fabrication drawings, material submittals, and construction documentation to verify compliance prior to installation.
- →Prepare, implement, update, and maintain Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) for mechanical systems, piping, and welding activities.
- →Inspect welding activities to ensure compliance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and welder qualifications.
- →Verify piping materials, material certificates, and traceability documentation against approved project specifications and submittals.
- →Oversee fit-up, welding, installation, and inspection of process and utility piping systems, including stainless steel, carbon steel, high-purity, and orbital welded systems.
- →Monitor pre-weld, in-process, and post-weld inspections, including visual inspections, dimensional verification, and coordination of Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) activities such as RT, UT, and PT.
- →Supervise and document hydrostatic, pneumatic, and helium leak testing activities for piping systems.
- →Ensure proper handling, storage, preservation, and protection of mechanical equipment and piping materials throughout construction.
- →Track, investigate, and manage Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) while implementing corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- →Maintain accurate QA/QC documentation, inspection reports, test records, turnover packages, and project quality dossiers for client handover.
- →Conduct field walkdowns to verify installation quality, mechanical completion, and punch list closure.
- →Support commissioning activities by validating pre-functional checklists, redline drawings, and mechanical system readiness.
- →Participate in project quality meetings, progress reviews, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- →Deliver toolbox talks and provide guidance on welding quality requirements, piping standards, and QA/QC best practices.
- →Verify calibration and certification status of inspection instruments, testing equipment, and welding inspection tools.
- →Assist with preparation of Operation & Maintenance (O&M) manuals, as-built documentation, turnover packages, and lessons learned during project closeout.
- →Effectively communicate project quality status, inspection results, and potential issues to project management and client stakeholders.
- →Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, codes, standards, procedures, and inspection documentation.
- →Perform any additional duties and responsibilities assigned within the scope of the role.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical QA/QC processes for industrial construction projects.
- Minimum 2–3 years of piping inspection experience required.
- Experience performing mechanical QA/QC inspections on industrial piping systems.
- Experience performing mechanical QA/QC inspections on industrial piping systems.
- Experience with pressure testing, piping walkdowns, turnover packages, and quality documentation preferred.
- Experience with plastic piping systems and bonding inspections is considered an asset.
- Thorough understanding of welding inspection practices and applicable ASME Section IX, AWS, and related industry codes.
- Experience inspecting process piping, utility piping, stainless steel, carbon steel, high-purity piping, and orbital welding systems.
- Knowledge of Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), quality management systems, and construction quality documentation.
- Experience coordinating Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) activities including RT, UT, and PT.
- Familiarity with pressure testing, including hydrostatic, pneumatic, and helium leak testing.
- Ability to review P&IDs, isometric drawings, fabrication drawings, and engineering specifications.
- Experience managing Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), corrective actions, and turnover documentation.
- Strong understanding of mechanical completion, punch list management, and commissioning support.
- Excellent documentation, organization, and record management skills.
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification is required.
- Associate or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related technical discipline is preferred.
- Proof of education, certifications, and licenses will be required where applicable.
