Main Purpose of Job
Join Us in Making a Difference at DJS!\r\n�The Maryland Department of Juvenile\r\nServices (DJS) is dedicated to transforming young lives, creating safer\r\ncommunities, and fostering equitable systems. We are seeking passionate\r\nindividuals for the role of�Community Detention Officer I,\r\nso come join our team and make a meaningful impact on youth and the community\r\nat DJS!\r\n�The Community Detention (CD) Program is a statewide\r\nalternative to detention program that allows a youth to be in the community on\r\ncourt-ordered home detention as opposed to being placed in secure confinement\r\npending a court appearance. Youth in the program are subject to enhanced\r\ntreatment and supervision through electronic monitoring, face-to-face and\r\ntelephone contacts, and daily telephone contacts by the Community Detention\r\nOfficer (CDO). The Command Center provides additional treatment coverage\r\ntwenty-four hours a day, seven days a week (24/7) by monitoring alerts and\r\nworking with the CDOs, police, DJS staff, and stakeholders when violations\r\noccur.\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:\r\nGraduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school\r\nequivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of\r\nEducation as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.\r\n�Experience: One (1) year of\r\nexperience supervising youth in a structured environment, such as in a\r\nrecreation center or school setting, or in a juvenile services facility or\r\ncommunity program.\r\n�Notes:\r\n1. The\r\nabove educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training\r\nCommission in accordance with the Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209,\r\nAnnotated Code of Maryland.\r\n�2. Candidates may\r\nsubstitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned\r\nofficer in Correctional Officer classifications or Correctional Officer\r\nspecialty codes in the Miscellaneous Occupations field of work on a\r\nyear-for-year basis for the required experience.\r\n
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
\r\nThe preferred candidate for this position\r\nmay possess any of the following qualifications:\r\n\r\n Three years of experience supervising youth in\r\n a structured environment, such as in a recreation center or school\r\n setting, or in a juvenile services facility or community program.\r\n Experience supervising youth in a juvenile\r\n facility.\r\n Knowledge of the processes and procedures of\r\n the juvenile court system.\r\n\r\n\r\n
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification must obtain certification by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.\r\n2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. \r\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. In accordance with the Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209�of the�Annotated Code of Maryland,�the Maryland Correctional Training Commission shall establish the minimum qualifications for probationary or permanent appointment of a Department of Juvenile Services employee in a mandated position. These requirements are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.10.01.04, general regulations of the Maryland Correctional Training Commission, and include:\r\n����U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status \r\n����Must be at least 21 years of age\r\n����A thorough background check, including fingerprinting and drug testing \r\n����An oral interview, and\r\n����Physical and psychological examinations.\r\n2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.\r\n
