As a Staff Frontend Engineer on the ML & Insights team, you will own the product surfaces where Medium's machine-learning algorithms meet our readers. You’ll be the driving force behind how new ML product experiences look, feel, and perform for millions of Medium users around the world.

This is a high-impact individual contributor role. As the sole web engineer on the team, you’ll own complex frontend initiatives and designs, move fluidly across the stack (from React components to API integrations to experiment wiring), and partner closely with our team of Data Scientists and ML Engineers to translate model outputs into growth experiments and new product experiences. Your work will ensure our web stack remains fast, reliable, and capable of supporting new ML features and experiences.

Staff engineers at Medium also act as technical leaders with impact across teams. You’ll partner closely with engineers, designers, and cross-functional leaders to tackle ambiguous problems, drive alignment on technical approaches, and raise the bar for frontend engineering across the organization. • You are a frontend-led, full-stack engineer with 7+ years of building complex, scalable frontend systems and features. You have deep proficiency in React and TypeScript, and you're comfortable owning features end-to-end, including backend integrations and API layers
• You are product minded and care deeply about UX, UI polish, and delivering delightful experiences to our users
• You have experience wiring up experiments and feature flags, and understand how to design experiments that produce meaningful signal
• You're comfortable working alongside ML systems. You don't need to write model code, but you can reason about model outputs, understand their constraints, and build great product experiences around them
• You thrive with high ownership and ambiguity (i.e. you can translate a data science hypothesis into shippable frontend work or ideate and execute on your own designs)
• You make pragmatic tradeoffs and communicate decisions clearly
• You leverage and experiment with new AI tools effectively while applying strong engineering judgment
• You sweat the small stuff. You care about copy, grammar, and consistency
• You’re focused on outcomes, not egos, and give direct feedback early and often
• You care about and contribute to the culture of the engineering org

• 7+ years of experience as a software engineer building complex and scalable frontend systems and components.
• Experience working on large-scale consumer or content platforms.
• Deep proficiency in React and Typescript (Bonus: GraphQL, AWS, experimentation frameworks).
• Experience operating at scale (millions of users, continuous delivery, feature flags, A/B testing).
• Experience improving testing infrastructure, developer tooling, or testing practices across frontend teams.
