The local agency Peer Counselor Supervisor manages the breastfeeding peer counseling program on a local program level and supervises the peer counselor(s). This position may require relocation/reassignment to any of our clinics based on business needs. Flexibility and willingness to relocate are required.

 

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the development and/or establish program goals and objectives for the local agency peer counseling program.
  • Oversees the planning, management, implementation, and evaluation of local agency peer counseling activities.
  • Keeps current with up-to-date breastfeeding information and disseminates this as well as FNS-provided information to other local agency staff.
  • Reports on peer counseling program activities to supervisor and the State agency
  • Establish peer counseling program protocols and policies.
  • Determining peer counselor caseload assignments and staffing needs.
  • Peer Counselor Supervisor must monitor breastfeeding peer counseling program expenditures to assure they are correctly reported in a timely manner.
  • Recruiting and interviewing potential peer counselors in alignment with program policies and standards.
  • Oversees and arranges orientation, training, and on-going training of peer counselors and peer counselor supervisors.
  • Mentors new peer counselors, providing routine follow-up and guidance during the early weeks of the job up to the first six months of employment.
  • Provides ongoing supervision and feedback for peer counselors.
  • Providing peer counselors with orientation to the WIC Program, staff, and community.
  • Monitoring participants contact documentation, including random quality assurance checks with participants.
  • Identifying a workspace, the peer counselor can use when working in the clinic.
  • Establishing a procedure for referring participants to the peer counselors.
  • Serving as the immediate supervisor for the peer counselors.
  • Meets with peer counselors monthly to provide ongoing supervision and support.
  • Ensures peer counselors are included in WIC staff meetings, as appropriate.
  • Collecting documentation records and data as appropriate.
  • Conducts a needs assessment to identify gaps in breastfeeding resources and services within the local agency and community that the WIC peer counseling program can address.
  • Monitoring the peer counselor program, including monthly audits/reviews of prenatal and post-partum contacts along with peer counseling program requirements to maintain compliance with all local, State, and Federal guidelines and regulations.
  • Routinely communicating to supervisor and/or State Peer Counseling program progress and/or concerns
  • Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are provided by the WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator.
  • May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned.
  • Use NVHC WIC records system to obtain information needed on specific individuals.
  • Attends and assists in community events.
  • Coordinates with local community stakeholders such as hospitals and health care providers to enhance the effectiveness of the peer counseling program.
  •  Assists in training of new employees or volunteers.
  • Attends training seminars, conferences, and meetings as assigned by WIC.

  • Constantly alert for ways to improve customer service, increase productivity, and improve utilization of resources communicating ideas to supervisor.
  • Notifies supervisor of unusual occurrences and adheres to policy regarding incident forms and/or patient complaints.
  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA, OSHA & other regulatory agencies.
  • Performs other work-related duties as requested by WIC VP/Manager

Requirements

  • Has credentials of an International Board-Certified Lactation Consult (IBCLC) or has other certification in lactation management (e.g., CLE, CLC) or completed advanced training in lactation management.
  • Meets the qualifications for a CPA (Competent Professional Authority)
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Minimum one year experience in counseling breastfeeding women

Requirements

  • Fluent in English and Spanish
  • Skill in operating computer databases
  • Ability to read, write, and calculate mathematical figures.
  • Knowledge of and ability to understand WIC Program requirements.
  • Has demonstrated experience in program management.
  • Has demonstrated expertise in breastfeeding management and promotion.
  • Has a minimum of one year experience counseling breastfeeding women.
  • Can complete required documentation and paperwork.
  • Has reliable transportation
  • Able to adhere to participant confidentiality policies.
  • Observes WIC staff, other peer counselors, and lactation consultants helping mothers breastfeed.
  • Ability to work and interact effectively and positively with other staff members to build and to enhance teamwork in the clinics and overall NVHC’s organization.
  • Ability to communicate in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to understand and respond appropriately, effectively, and sensitively to special population groups as defined by race, ethnicity, language, age, sex, etc.
  • Ability to travel and/or provide coverage to multiple clinic locations
