INTRODUCTION:

New Path Youth and Family Services is an accredited children’s mental health agency providing a range of compassionate, innovative and accessible services for children, youth and their families throughout Simcoe County. New Path respectfully acknowledges we are situated on the traditional land of the Anishinaabeg People which includes the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Pottawatomi Nations collectively known as the Three Fires Confederacy. 


PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Brief Counsellor provides shorter term individual, family and group counselling to children, youth and their families at home, in school and throughout the community using a brief model of intervention. 


JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  1. Assess the needs of children, youth and families, formulating treatment plans including goals and service strategies. 
  2. Meet with clients and/or their families to provide support & counselling, using evidence based/informed programs. 
  3. Actively participate in the treatment planning process for clients including monitoring of each individual's progress toward the attainment of their identified goals.
  4. Initiate or attend case conference meetings as required. 
  5. Provide follow-up service to discharged clients as needed. 
  6. Assist client(s) in making referrals to community resources as needed. 
  7. Act as case manager for assigned client(s). 
  8. Provide consultation to New Path Staff, other agency personnel or the community. 
  9. Function as a supportive member of the team.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W)
  2. Minimum two years' experience working with children, youth and their families in a children's mental health or related service
  3. Experience/training in Single Session Counselling
  4. Experience working with evidence based/informed programs

  6. Recognizes, initiates and adapts to changing conditions and situations in the workplace. 
  7. Demonstrates awareness for the backgrounds, values, beliefs and traditions of staff, clients, families and communities we serve. 
  8. Continuously assesses and challenges assumptions, personal unconscious bias and commits to understanding diverse perspectives, experiences and their intersectionality. 
  9. Commits to ongoing training to build the knowledge, awareness and skills, that contribute to creating a culturally safe environment for staff, clients and families. 
  10. Competency and effective use of database and Microsoft Office systems. 
  11. Confident, articulate and professional when communicating verbally and in writing. 
  12. French language is an asset. 


WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

The promotion of self-care and staff well-being is part of our everyday culture. We value people's time both at work and home. We know that when staff feel safe, find their work meaningful and are appreciated by the agency then we achieve optimal outcomes for our clients and families. 

  1. Working hours are Monday – 11 am – 7 pm, Tuesday – 9:30 am- 5:30 pm, Wednesday – 9:30 am – 5:30 pm, Thursday – 11 am -7 pm to accommodate client and family schedules. Some flexibility required for Friday for all staff events and training, advanced notice will be provided.
  2. This position is primarily performed in office/on-site to support the in-person meeting preferences of our clients and families. Some administrative tasks (non-client facing work) can be requested to be completed remotely (Work From Home). 
  3. Willingness to travel to other agency offices and community using personal vehicle. Must have valid driver's license with minimum G2. 
  4. Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer.
