JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Electrician – Journeyperson
Department: Manufacturing
Reports To: Production Manager
Status: Non-Exempt
Vacancy: Yes
Salary Range: $32.00 - $40.00
(Actual salary is based on geographic location, qualifications, and experience)
Summary:
The successful candidate will be responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing industrial electrical systems and equipment in a manufacturing or industrial environment, ensuring compliance with all safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair industrial electrical systems up to 600V and above, including power distribution, motor controls, PLCs, and automation equipment.
Diagnose electrical, control, and instrumentation issues using schematics, drawings, and diagnostic tools.
Perform preventive and predictive maintenance to minimize downtime and improve equipment reliability.
Work with motors, VFDs, MCCs, transformers, sensors, and control panels.
Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.
Support production and maintenance teams during breakdowns and planned shutdowns.
Ensure all work complies with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC), ESA, and company safety policies.
Lockout/tagout (LOTO) and follow all OH&S regulations.
Assist with equipment upgrades, installations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Accurately document work orders, maintenance activities, and inspections.
Mentor apprentices and support training initiatives as required.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for performing duties in a safe manner and promoting safety in accordance with Newterra’s safety policies and procedures.
Complies with Quality Management Systems in accordance Newterra’s internal quality standards.
Complete all responsibilities while ensuring adherence to Newterra’s Delegation of Authority.
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Valid Ontario 309A Construction & Maintenance Electrician Certificate or 442A Industrial Electrician Certificate of Qualification (Journeyman).
Red Seal endorsement (preferred but not required).
Minimum 3–5 years post-apprenticeship industrial experience.
Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems, controls, and automation.
Experience with PLC troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or equivalent preferred).
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Excellent attention to detail and safety awareness.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience in manufacturing, heavy industry, or process environments.
Familiarity with robotics and automated systems.
Experience with preventive maintenance programs (CMMS).
Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) familiarity and inspection readiness.
Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and overtime as required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to use both hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls, stand for long periods of time and repeat the same motions. Must also be able to push, pull and maneuver up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment
Frequently work outdoors. This is a manufacturing environment and will be exposed to elements such as loud noise, hazardous equipment, heat, dirt, dust, fumes, and other hazardous materials. Often wear PPE, such as safety goggles, masks, or ear plugs. Frequently exposed to distracting and uncomfortable noise levels from machinery. May be exposed to hazardous situations when working with large metal parts and cutting tools. Company safety standards must be always followed.
