Who We Are

New Jersey Harm Reduction Coalition (NJHRC) is on a mission to create a New Jersey that values the safety and dignity of all people who use drugs—and we're making it happen. Since incorporating in 2020, we've built two Harm Reduction Centers, launched a community drug checking program, and changed laws to expand syringe services and naloxone access.

NJHRC accomplishes this through direct harm reduction services (Middlesex Harm Reduction Center and Statewide Harm Reduction Center), training and technical assistance, and policy advocacy. Your work as Training and Capacity Building Manager will directly shape how harm reduction is understood and practiced across New Jersey.

The Opportunity: Training and Capacity Building Manager

NJHRC is seeking a Training and Capacity Building Manager to lead and expand its training and technical assistance initiatives. This role is the connective tissue of NJHRC's training ecosystem—matching organizations that need training with the right trainers, managing a roster of NJHRC staff and external contractors, keeping schedules and logistics humming, and stepping in to facilitate trainings yourself.

This is a role for someone who is an exceptionally strong project manager, deeply relationship-oriented, and tech-savvy enough to build and maintain the systems that keep everything organized. You'll work with stakeholders at all levels of familiarity with harm reduction—supporting those already incorporating its principles and guiding those who are new to the work—to help embed these practices into their programs and policies. All work will be grounded in evidence-informed, person-centered, and trauma-informed approaches that reflect best practices in harm reduction, care engagement, and public health.

What You'll Do

The below represents today's job. Competitive candidates will bring enthusiasm for and experience with evolving programmatic design and a genuine passion for expanding harm reduction statewide.

Coordinate & manage the training ecosystem (50%)

  • Maintain and manage a roster of trainers, including NJHRC staff and external contractors, matching the right trainer to each request based on expertise, availability, and audience needs
  • Own the logistics end-to-end: track incoming training requests, manage scheduling, coordinate materials, and follow up to ensure smooth delivery
  • Build and maintain the systems and tools (spreadsheets, project management platforms, databases) that keep the training operation organized and scalable
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for organizations seeking training, building authentic relationships and ensuring their needs are understood and met
  • Track and report on training activities, outcomes, and feedback to drive continuous improvement and meet funder reporting requirements

Facilitate trainings & build capacity (30%)

  • Design and deliver trainings yourself for a range of audiences—from frontline staff to clinical teams to government partners—on harm reduction principles and practices
  • Provide coaching, consultation, and follow-up support to ensure real implementation of harm reduction–aligned services after trainings conclude
  • Work with stakeholders at all levels, from harm reduction veterans to those just starting out, to help embed these practices into their programs and policies

Strengthen relationships & represent NJHRC (10%)

  • Represent NJHRC externally through trainings, public speaking, media engagement, and advocacy opportunities
  • Identify policy and system barriers surfaced through training work and flag them to the policy team to support advocacy efforts
  • Contribute insights from training and technical assistance to help NJHRC sharpen its approach and deepen its statewide impact

Cross-org collaboration (10%)

  • Coordinate closely with program, policy, and development teams to ensure training work is aligned with organizational priorities and funder commitments
  • Flex into cross-organizational roles and responsibilities as needed in a fast-moving, growing nonprofit

Who You Are

You are an organized, relationship-driven operator who genuinely loves harm reduction. You're the kind of person who builds the spreadsheet before anyone asks, follows up before anyone has to remind you, and still makes everyone feel like they're your top priority. You're as comfortable troubleshooting a scheduling conflict as you are facilitating a room full of skeptical clinicians.

Must-Haves

  • Exceptional project management skills. You are highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive. You can juggle multiple moving pieces—schedules, rosters, requests, deadlines—without dropping the ball. You build systems that work and maintain them over time.
  • Tech savvy. You're comfortable and confident with technology: spreadsheets, project management platforms (e.g. Asana, Notion), scheduling tools, and data reporting. You don't wait for someone to build the system for you.
  • Training in harm reduction practices. You have been formally trained in harm reduction and bring hands-on experience implementing harm reduction principles in a program or organizational context.
  • Training facilitation experience. You can design and facilitate engaging, effective trainings for diverse audiences—whether frontline staff, clinical teams, or government partners.
  • Relationship-building. You connect authentically across contexts and build trust with participants, staff, contractors, and community stakeholders. You're responsive, warm, and reliable—people want to work with you.
  • Public speaking skills. You're comfortable representing NJHRC to external audiences, whether facilitating a training, speaking with reporters, or testifying before legislators.
  • Strong communication skills. Your written and verbal communication is clear, effective, and tailored to your audience. You can advocate for program needs and manage up to align on priorities.
  • Valid driver's license. this role includes in-person site visits and off-site trainings

Nice-to-Haves

  • Lived/Living Experience with Drug Use
  • Familiarity with harm reduction resources, networks, and advocacy in New Jersey
  • Bilingual in Spanish (verbal and written)
  • Experience managing harm reduction programs specifically (e.g., syringe exchange programs)
  • Prior experience supervising staff

A Note to Potential Candidates

Studies have shown that women, trans, non-binary people, and BIPOC candidates are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every qualification. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive organization, and we are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job. That candidate may come from a less traditional background, and we welcome the opportunity for new insight into our work. We strongly encourage you to apply, even if you don't believe you meet every qualification described.

Salary and Benefit Details

  • Salary: $40,000–$45,000 annually (part-time, 24-30 hours/week), with starting salary determined by demonstrated experience and qualifications. The majority of candidates will start at the lower end of this band.
  • Health benefits: 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees. For employees with eligible dependents, NJHRC pays 100% of total benefit costs (employee + dependents) up to $1,200/month.
  • Additional benefits: 20 paid vacation days, 15 paid holidays, half-day "Summer Fridays" in July and August; retirement plan with up to 5% employer match; Employee Assistance Program; $500 professional development fund plus organization-wide professional development opportunities.

Equal Opportunity Employment
