Nova Credit’s Legal & Compliance team is focused on helping the company grow while guiding it through its legal, contractual, and regulatory obligations. Operating in a highly regulated industry, the L&C teams are an essential part of Nova Credit’s business and strategy. In this highly cross-functional role, you would be relied upon for your legal acumen and have broad exposure to Nova Credit’s business operations and product development process.

- Get to know Nova Credit’s organizational structure, key agreements, and legal processes
- Dive into the regulatory environment that impacts us and our customers (FCRA, CCPA, GLBA, 1033, Fair Lending, Fair Housing)
- Understand our product offerings and market, and how it all developed: the legal team’s involvement at various stages, and processes that may be led versus supported by legal team members
- Get to know the company's working style, goals, mission, and values
- Become acquainted with fellow Novans in our team and across the company, as well as key cross-functional stakeholders
- Dive deeper into products, key regulatory features, risks, challenges, and areas for future development
- Work hand-in-hand with the product, data science, and engineering teams on new features, product development and positioning
- Review and develop a deep understanding of company policies and procedures
- Get to know the credit reporting and analysis industry - including bureaus, financial institutions, credit providers, and other fintechs
- Advise the business on product requirements and limitations
- Get to know our corporate organizational structure and work with key stakeholders on ongoing company organizational management projects
- Become a key advisor and first point of call for legal and regulatory risks and issues associated with products and features
- Guide our product, engineering, and data teams in navigating credit reporting and related regulatory frameworks, and serve as a thought partner on new ideas for our product strategies
- Help guide the legal aspects of international expansion strategies and required licensing
- Coordinate and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure consistent implementation of legal guidance and alignment on risk
- Analyze our legal processes, identify issues, and help the organization become more efficient
- Keep up on the industry and revise and update policies, forms, and agreements where necessary
- Work on cross-functional company initiatives and other special projects
- Help our Go-to-Market and marketing teams with respect to product positioning and completing regulatory or compliance reviews by customers
- Help us develop our legal organization as we expand into new regions
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and active bar membership; 5+ years of relevant legal experience, including meaningful time in-house at a fintech, financial institution, consumer reporting agency or company operating in the consumer financial products space
- Experience advising product, data, and engineering teams on complex legal concepts: able to issue-spot early, articulate risk clearly, and propose practical solutions in a fast-moving environment
- Proven ability to navigate complex, heavily regulated environments, translating regulatory requirements into practical business guidance; experience with FCRA strongly preferred; familiarity with Fair Lending, Fair Housing and other state and federal consumer finance regulations is a plus
- Strong communicator with a demonstrated ability to translate complex legal requirements into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders
- Comfort operating in ambiguity: experience making sound, supported judgments where the regulatory landscape is evolving or unsettled
$215,000 - $264,000 per year
The above compensation range is for US-based candidates and is dependent on individual experience, skills, education, location, and qualifications. We consider all elements of compensation to be a part of the value we provide to Novans. This may include base salary, equity grants, incentive compensation for eligible roles, professional development, flexible PTO, and tenure rewards. In the U.S., our benefits package includes comprehensive and generously subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance options, along with a company-sponsored 401k plan, parental leave of absence, sick time off, and paid time off vacation.
