Planned Parenthood Great Plains is expanding access to care in Louisiana, with telehealth services expected to launch later this summer and in-person care planned to return to New Orleans later this year. Care in Louisiana will be provided by Planned Parenthood of Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma (PPAEO), part of the Planned Parenthood Great Plains network of care. 
 
 
Reproductive Health Assistants (RHAs) participate in a team approach to patient care which requires effectively communicating with patients from a wide range of backgrounds and ages and supporting their healthcare experience with compassion and excellent care.  The RHA is responsible for assisting patients including, but not limited to, front desk operations, patient education, patient care, laboratory work, sonogram services, surgical support and recovery.  These responsibilities require the RHA to train and work at multiple stations. 

Front Desk 

  • Performs front desk functions including answering phones and greeting and checking-in patients. 

  • Financial Responsibilities: a) Collects health plan authorization, insurance cards with picture ID’s, completes appropriate forms and obtains signatures per PPGP policy; b) Verifies patient’s insurance, determines patient payment responsibility at the time of service and posts all charges and payments received at the time of service to the billing system; c) Enters data accurately for patient visits and fees in EMR/EHR to increase accuracy and efficiency of claims process; d) Maintains confidentiality, prepares deposit slips, runs end-of-day reports for delivery of daily deposit to bank as instructed by the Health Center Manager; e)  Adheres to all money handling procedures, collecting co-pays and other patient payments. 

Education 

  • Conducts patient educational sessions including providing informed consent counseling to ensure that the patient understands and agrees to their medical care, and that the patient makes voluntary decisions with the absence of coercion. 

  • Counsels patient on options after pregnancy, including: parenting, adoption and abortions. 

  • Provides clients with accurate information regarding PPGP services, including questions pertaining to contraception, options, and funding sources. 

Laboratory 

  • Practice proper patient identification, label vials with patient names and dates. 

  • Determine best method for drawing blood depending on the patient and collect blood samples from patients. 

  • Prepares laboratory specimens; performs basic laboratory tests on the premises; disposes of contaminated supplies; sterilizes medical instruments; and performs other procedures as requested. 

  • Comply with health center policy on leaving samples for transportation to laboratory. 

  • Conducts tests according to the Clinical Laboratory Improvements Amendments (CLIA) standards and adheres to OSHA regulations when handling biological matter. 

  • Practice infection control standards at all times when working with patients and equipment. 

Patient Care  

  • Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical and social history; taking vital signs; confirming purpose of visit or treatment, and reviews medications and allergies.  Completes records by recording patient examination, treatment, and test results. 

  • Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examination room; provides examination gowns and drapes; helps them to position themselves for the examination and/or treatment; arranges examination room instruments, supplies, and equipment. 

  • Supports patient care delivery by assisting health care providers during examinations; prepares laboratory specimens; performs basic laboratory tests on the premises; disposes of contaminated supplies; sterilizes medical instruments; and performs other procedures as requested 

General Essential Job Functions 

  • Supports patient care delivery by assisting health care providers during examinations 

  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in relevant webinars.  Understands and complies with Child and Minor Abuse identification and reporting. 

  • Maintains confidentiality of all agency information, employee nonpublic personal information (NPI) and personal health information (PHI), as well as records directly or indirectly identifying any per­son currently or formerly receiving services from PPGP. Complies with regulations regarding patient rights. 

  • Adheres to PPGP policies regarding professionalism, minimizing patient wait time in the Health Center and on the phone, adhering to the system to address patient complaints, and implementing patient satisfaction surveys following each visit.  

  • Supports and carries out PPGP’s Mission: upholding the standards of high quality sexual and reproductive healthcare; provides education that promotes informed proud and authentic sexuality; influences the culture through advocacy to ensure equality in reproductive and sexual decision making.  

  • Supports the onboarding of teammates

  • Additional responsibilities will be assigned as needed to maintain and improve effective functioning of the Health Services department and to advance PPGP’s mission.  All job responsibilities will be carried out under the direction of PPGP’s policies and procedures. 

 

 

Required Education and Experience 

  • High School diploma or equivalent required. 

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including Saturdays  

  • 1-2 years experience in a healthcare setting including electronic health records (EHR) experience.  Epic experience is preferred.
