- Full-time (1 FTE) appointment on a fixed term basis for 2 years.
- Base salary range: Level D, $179,945 – $197,969 p.a. plus 17% superannuation.
The Astrophotonics Program brings together researchers from astronomy, physics and engineering to design, build and test advanced photonic technologies with applications in radio astronomy, optical astronomy, space science, quantum technologies and national security. The group is internationally recognised for its expertise in the long-distance transfer of stabilised photonic timing and communication signals over optical fibre and free-space laser links.
Supported by significant ongoing investment from the Western Australian Government and the Joint Venture Universities, this is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving research environment and help define the next generation of photonic technologies.
About the Role
~1 min read- Leading internationally recognised research programs and delivering high-impact research outcomes.
- Securing competitive research funding from national and international funding agencies, industry and government partners.
- Supervising and mentoring Masters, PhD and early-career researchers and fostering an inclusive, collaborative team culture.
- Providing strategic leadership, program management and reporting across the Astrophotonics research portfolio.
- Representing ICRAR and UWA through professional associations, conferences, industry engagement and stakeholder partnerships.
- Building strong interdisciplinary collaborations across academia, government and industry to increase research impact and translation.

- A PhD in physics, astronomy, engineering or another relevant discipline, with an internationally recognised research profile and an outstanding publication record in leading peer-reviewed journals.
- Proven success in attracting competitive research funding and developing sustainable research collaborations across academia, government and industry.
- Significant experience leading research teams and supervising higher degree research (HDR) students and early-career researchers to successful outcomes.
- Expertise in several of the following areas: radio astronomy instrumentation, free-space optical laser communications (terrestrial and/or space applications), and quantum technologies.
- Outstanding leadership, communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with a demonstrated commitment to inclusion, diversity, collaboration and research excellence.
