Senior Specialist Engineer (RF & Microwave)

- Full-time appointment on a fixed term basis for 12 months.
- Base salary range: $134,288 – $142,099 p.a. plus 17% superannuation.
The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) is a high‑profile WA State funded joint venture between Curtin University and The University of Western Australia. Established in 2009, ICRAR is one of the largest astronomy institutions in Australia and a leading national contributor to the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Project.
The Astrophotonics Group at ICRAR specialises in the design, development and testing of advanced photonic systems used across radio astronomy, optical astronomy and space science. With core expertise in stabilised optical-frequency and microwave-frequency transfer, the group brings together world‑class researchers and engineers in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
About the Role
~1 min read- Work on extreme precision timing and phase-coherent systems at global scale.
- Influence design standards and long-life (multi-decade) engineering outcomes.
- Collaborate with international partners across science, engineering and industry.
- Relevant Tertiary qualification in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, or closely related discipline (or equivalent demonstrated experience).
- Minimum 5–7 years practical experience in RF/microwave and mixed-signal product design, including hands-on PCB layout for controlled-impedance and high-frequency designs, with extensive experience typically expected at a senior engineering level.
- Demonstrated experience designing and working with RF systems operating in the GHz frequency range, including an understanding of high-frequency effects such as signal integrity, parasitics, and transmission line behaviour.
- Substantial Altium experience: schematic capture, PCB layout, stackup design, footprint creation and generating manufacturing deliverables, with demonstrated ability to review and approve the work of other engineers.
- Strong experience in precision analogue design, including low-noise circuits, phase noise optimisation, power integrity, and high-stability signal paths in RF systems.
