Rent The Runway established its European Technology Hub in Galway in April 2019. Based in the historic Claddagh area of the city, the growing team in Galway tackles core technology challenges and influences the next generation of services critical to Rent The Runway’s success and continued growth.
The Galway office is Rent the Runway's first international office outside the US and enables the company to significantly expand its Software Engineering, Product Development, Machine Learning Engineering and Data Science footprint. About the Role
~1 min readWe are looking for a Back End/Full Stack Engineer who values great code, user experience, and data-driven experimentation. On the Consumer Retention team, you’ll optimize the early customer journey to accelerate user acquisition and maximize conversion across all devices. We build scalable acquisition funnels, seamless onboarding flows, and robust A/B testing infrastructure to create world-class experiences—from a user's first visit to their first order! We work in an agile environment, shipping high-quality software to solve complex problems and drive business growth.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Participate in all aspects of agile software development, including design, implementation, and deployment
- →Develop clean, testable, scalable systems using Java, Kotlin, Dropwizard, SpringBoot, Redis, MongoDB, RabbitMQ, Splunk, MySQL and other open source technologies
- →You’ll build intuitive and well-tested APIs for manipulating & retrieving data.
- →You will optimise for performance and scalability.
- →Drive technical projects to success in a fast-paced startup environment.
- →You’ll deprecate and remove functionality & services that no longer suit our needs.
- →Find architectural improvements to enable rapid growth in traffic and order volumes while continuously improving developer productivity.
- →Work with business stakeholders to identify software solutions to business challenges.
- →Assist in prioritisation efforts, planning future roadmaps, and provide mentorship to others.
- BA/BS in Computer Science, a related degree, or 4+ years of practical experience.
- You have hands-on, production-level experience across significant parts of our technology stack:
- Backend: Java, Kotlin, SpringBoot, RabbitMQ, MySQL, MongoDB.
- Frontend: ReactJS, Next.js.
- You have experience and enthusiasm for testing, test-driven development, and building reliable systems.
- You have a strong command of best practices, design patterns, and system architecture tradeoffs.
- You can hit the ground running and quickly familiarise yourself with an existing codebase and toolset.
- You have experience with distributed system performance analysis and optimisation.
- You can understand, diagnose, and articulate technical challenges and solutions effectively.
- You have a high level of comfort navigating ambiguity and making the tradeoffs without compromising quality.
- You're a collaborative partner who thrives in a cross-functional environment, working closely with product, design, and engineers across various tech stacks to build cohesive, high-impact solutions.
- You’re comfortable leveraging AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Cursor, Gemini CLI, or Claude) to accelerate development cycles and streamline workflows.
