Volunteer and Humane Education Assistant
The Volunteer & Humane Education Assistant is a part-time position that reports to and works closely with our Volunteer and Community Outreach Manager. This role supports the SPCA of Westchester’s mission by helping recruit, engage and retain volunteers while strengthening connections with the community through outreach, education and public engagement initiatives.
The ideal candidate is organized, enthusiastic about animal welfare, and enjoys building relationships with volunteers, community partners, and the public.
Schedule
Part-Time (approximately 15-20 hours per week)
Wednesday – Sunday availability
Compensation
$18.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities
Humane Education
- Participate in SPCA on-site and off-site events, including camps, birthday parties, community events, school programs, and humane education programs.
- Help prepare outreach materials, correspondence, presentations and event supplies.
- Assist in planning and presenting educational outreach activities that promote animal welfare, responsible pet ownership, adoption, fostering, and volunteer opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the SPCA’s mission and programs.
Volunteer Program Support
- Assist with volunteer inquiries and record maintenance.
- Support volunteer orientation, training, and scheduling.
- Help volunteer retention through appreciation initiatives and engagement activities.
- Track volunteer participation and essential metrics.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Experience working with people of diverse ages, backgrounds, and communities.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including comfort speaking with the public and presenting in group settings.
- Comfortable working around dogs and other shelter animals.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace.
- Commitment to the mission of animal welfare and humane treatment of animals.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during events.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to work in both office and shelter environments.
- May have exposure to animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and activity levels.
Work Environment
This position operates in a combination of office, shelter, and community settings. The employee may be required to attend off-site events, outreach activities, and organizational functions.
