POSITION SUMMARY:

The goal of the Tribal Language/Culture program is to revitalize the language, culture and history of the Spokane Tribe. Our main goal is to ensure that the language and culture are being passed down from generation to generation. The Language/Culture Teacher will learn the Spokane Language and assist the efforts to revitalize the Spokane Language and Culture.



MAJOR DUTIES AND REPSONSIBITIES:

  • This position will have regular contact with and/or control over children as part of their job duties.
  • Teach Spokane Salish to students at the local district on the Spokane Indian Reservation and surrounding school districts.
  • Able to substitute in any Language Department language class, Back to the Heart School, or K-12th grade classes as needed
  • Assist in curriculum development that addresses and meets the Mission, Vision Statement and Goals of the Language/Culture Program.
  • Spokane Salish related outreach with youth and tribal community.
  • Adopt the Tribal values and able to model the Tribal values in every aspect of their job duties.
  • Supervise and monitor children as needed.
  • Participate in scheduled collaborative team meetings.
  • Must learn the language and culture of the Spokane Tribe.
  • Able to teach the language through stories, songs and games.
  • Teach children in outdoor settings, implement and assist on cultural field trips.
  • Must be willing to continue education/training in culturally relevant classroom management, culturally relevant teaching methods, and effective teaching strategies for teaching Native American Students.
  • Assist teachers as needed in outdoor settings and promote exploration, problem solving, cooperation, socialization, and choice time through traditional guided learning.
  • Prepare classroom materials to support developmentally and culturally appropriate curriculum/lesson plans.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding each child's progress.
  • Assist in teaching language classes for parents, guardians, and community members to learn the language/culture in order for them to communicate with their children.
  • Document all significant classroom issues.
  • Attend meetings, trainings and on the job development activities.
  • Monitor and report child abuse.
  • Take initiative in developing and improving their own fluency.
  • Language/Culture training will be provided.
  • Other duties as requested or assigned.






MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Successfully completed 40 lessons in npoqínišcn 1 (N1), Stories 1, and 40 lessons in npoqínišcn 2 (N2).
  • Must have a valid WA State Driver’s License, good driving record and be able to hold Tribal insurance.
  • Must complete a course in Issues in Child Abuse and Neglect (can complete within three months of hire).
  • Will be required to apply for and receive a First People’s Language, Culture and Oral Traditions (state) Certification.
  • Must be able to pass required federal and tribal background checks
  • Fingerprints on file
  • CPR Training (can obtain upon hire)
  • Must have 2-3 years of teaching in a classroom setting.
  • Must complete a course in Child Neglect
  • Must obtain a Tribal and First People's Language, Culture and Oral Traditions Certification.
