~1 min readThe Image Direction Specialist is responsible for executing real-time switching and on-air control within SportyNet’s digital television environment. This professional works inside the channel’s switcher/control room, ensuring seamless transitions, correct execution of breaks, insertion of graphics and promos, and maintaining the integrity of the broadcast signal.
Acting as a key link between Production, MCR, Engineering, and Programming, the Switcher Room Operator ensures that every on-air output matches the channel’s technical, editorial, and timing requirements.
Responsibilities
~2 min readLive Switching & On-Air Execution
- →Operate switcher/control room systems during live shows, continuity blocks, replays, and special broadcasts
- →Execute transitions, cuts, wipes, and on-air graphic elements according to the rundown or control-room cues
- →Trigger commercial breaks, promos, channel IDs, and sponsored content at precise timing
- →Follow instructions from directors, producers, and technical supervisors during live broadcasts
Technical Signal Monitoring & On-Air Quality Control
- →Monitor outgoing program feed for video quality, audio consistency, sync, and timing accuracy
- →Identify and respond quickly to black frames, freeze frames, audio drops, misfires, or graphic errors
- →Ensure redundancy paths and backup signals are ready and functional
- →Run pre-show checks to verify all on-air elements (graphics, feeds, VTs, transitions)
Coordination with MCR, Production & Editorial Teams
- →Maintain constant communication with MCR for playlist execution, timing conflicts, and late changes
- →Work with Production to ensure all assets (VTs, promos, lower-thirds, bugs) are ready and loaded
- →Collaborate with Programming to confirm break timing, revised schedules, and last-minute adjustments
- →Support the editorial team during breaking news or unexpected content switches
Switcher Room Setup & Technical Preparation
- →Prepare sources, inputs, keyers, DSKs, and macros required for each show or continuity block
- →Verify routing of cameras, vMix sources, graphic systems, server outputs, and remote feeds
- →Load and confirm correct graphic templates, transitions, and overlays
- →Coordinate with Engineering for switcher updates, troubleshooting, and configuration checks
Commercial & Promo Insertions
- →Execute commercial breaks with accurate timing, following programming logs and MCR instructions
- →Ensure promos, branded moments, sponsorships, and bumpers fire correctly and completely
- →Report any misfires or discrepancies to MCR and Programming
Workflow Documentation & Operational Discipline
- →Maintain detailed logs of on-air issues, operator actions, and technical alerts
- →Follow SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for switcher room operation
- →Ensure clean and organized operation stations, routing sheets, and control interfaces
- →Participate in rehearsals, pilots, and simulations for new shows or technical upgrades
- Degree or technical training in Broadcasting, Audiovisual Production, Media Engineering, or related fields
- Experience operating switcher/control room systems in TV, live production, or digital broadcast
- Familiarity with studio control rooms, MCR environments, and broadcast workflows
- Experience with live sports broadcasts is a strong advantage
- Proficiency with broadcast switchers and control-room automation systems
- Understanding of signal routing, SDI/IP workflows, multiviewers, and video server operations
- Knowledge of audio/video standards, color, sync, and on-air timing
- Familiarity with graphic systems (CG, overlays, bugs, lower-thirds)
- Ability to troubleshoot under pressure and respond to live broadcast incidents
- Intermediate English for documentation and communication with vendors
