Reporting to the Associate Director, Data Science - Orchestration, this senior engineer will lead backend systems that power member-provider matching and precision care routing. This role is part of the Orchestration Group and is critical to translating machine learning and business logic into scalable, reliable production services that improve member experience, utilization, and margin performance.
Please note that this is a hybrid role based in San Francisco, with an expectation to be in the office 2–3 days per week at our 2 Embarcadero Ctr. location. Candidates must be based in the San Francisco metro area or able to relocate independently within 90 days of their start date. Occasional travel will be required for team on-sites.
Responsibilities

- →Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ship high-impact systems that improve member experience, care access, and business performance.
- →Expand and maintain existing backend applications and infrastructure that operationalize machine learning and decisioning logic.
- →Debug and resolve issues quickly and efficiently.
- →Provide technical leadership in architectural discussions, code reviews, and system planning.
- →Uphold high engineering standards, including test coverage, documentation, and performance.
- →Participate in an on-call rotation to support system reliability and respond to production issues.
- →Collaborate flexibly across time zones, as needed, to support distributed teams and stakeholders.
- →Lead delivery of complex projects from conception to deployment
- →Mentor and guide engineers, fostering growth and best practices
- →Drive integration of observability, performance monitoring, and resiliency features
- →Partner with stakeholders to shape product strategy through technical input
- Deliver high-impact, high-quality projects on time and with stakeholder satisfaction
- Maintain high system reliability and quality through strong testing and scalable design
- Drive cross-functional collaboration with product, design, data science, or other teams, to align on goals and delivery
- Lead by example through strong individual contributions and peer mentorship
- Deliver measurable improvements in engineering velocity, scalability, or developer experience
- Identify cross-team opportunities and contribute to organizational-level improvement
- 6–8+ years of experience in software development with a focus on backend development
- Expertise in at least one of the following languages: Ruby on Rails, Java, C#, Python, or equivalent
- Proven experience leading delivery of complex technical projects or 0–1 product development
- Strong cross-functional collaboration and mentorship abilities
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Familiarity with observability and experimentation tools, such as Datadog, LaunchDarkly, Sentry, Mixpanel, Iterable
- Experience architecting complex systems or microservices
- Experience with containerization or cloud infrastructure tools, such as Docker or AWS
- Fluency in SQL and modern data tooling (e.g., DBT, Snowflake)
- Bonus: Experience with ML-powered product systems, recommendation/ranking systems, or experimentation-driven platforms
The target base salary range for this position is $207,000 - $233,000, and is part of a competitive total rewards package including stock options and benefits. Individual pay may vary from the target range and is determined by a number of factors including experience, location, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations. We review all employee pay and compensation programs annually using Radford Global Compensation Database at minimum to ensure competitive and fair pay.
