The Access Services Librarian provides library service to law faculty, students, staff, alumni, and other members of the university community as well as public patrons. The Access Services Librarian manages day-to-day activities at the circulation desk including: ensuring service coverage at the circulation desk during weekday, evening shifts; charging out materials; responding to patron inquiries including directional reference questions; managing interlibrary loan operations including providing training and continued assistance to the Law School’s journal editors and staff; serving as faculty liaison for course reserves; supervising 20-25 Access Services part-time student employees. The Access Services Librarian also works directly with the Assistant Director of Access Services to help evaluate procedures and policies to ensure the Law Library continues to meet the needs of all of its users.
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:of $68,000–$72,000.
Responsibilities
~3 min read- →Staffs the Circulation Desk, including responding to patron inquiries, charging out materials to patrons, and answering directional reference questions during designated 1 Page 1 of 6evening hours; this position holds an alternate schedule of 12-8PM Monday-Thursday, 10-6PM Friday.
- →Hires, supervises, trains, and evaluates 20-25 part-time student employees in the Access Services Department. Coordinates completion of I-9 paperwork and other documentation with the CUA Human Resources Office to ensure compliance with university hiring and payroll policies and procedures.
- →Serves as the Librarian-in-Charge for the Access Services Department in the absence of the Assistant Director of Access Services. Employs operational problem-solving for student, faculty, alumni, and public patron issues, exercising professional judgment to refer more advanced issues to the Assistant Director of Access Services.
- →Manages the Law Library’s interlibrary loan and resource sharing operations, including both borrowing and lending, following standards set by the Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States. Uses bibliographic searching skills to identify and retrieve specialized legal and nonlegal materials in electronic or print format per requests submitted by law faculty and students. Uses all available resources including the Law Library’s and CUA University Libraries’ collections and electronic resource access, and OCLC’s WorldShare Interlibrary Loan platform to fulfill these requests. Coordinates delivery of materials to requesters, and oversees the proper return of all borrowed materials to the owning institution in a timely manner.
- →Serves as faculty liaison for Course Reserves. Works directly with law faculty and the Assistant Director of Collection Services to ensure correct semester textbooks are purchased and received. Supports the Access Services Manager in updating courses and reading lists in the Library’s integrated library system, Ex Libris’ Alma each semester.
- →Provides instructional presentations, training, and outreach to editors and staff at journal orientation, facilitates borrowing, coordinates research inquiries and maintains student access to specialized services.
- →Participates in departmental meetings led by the Assistant Director of Access Services in order to evaluate library policy, troubleshoot problems, and suggest improvements, including implementation of new tools and services.
- →Serves as a resource for library staff regarding user accessibility. Collaborates with the Assistant Director of Access Services and the Research Services Department to evaluate student needs and concerns to ensure the Library’s physical spaces are accessible to all users, and that the Library’s web-based services comply with current web accessibility standards.
- →In cooperation with Research Services, develops and maintains select library user guides. Participates in the development or improvement of web-based services, including, but not limited to LibGuides and LibCal. Maintains select library blogs. Serves on library committees (e.g. the marketing/outreach committee).
- →Maintains written policies, procedures, and training materials for the desk attendant handbook as well as contributing to Staff LibGuides for the Access Services Department.
- →In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Collection Services, assists with training of the Graduate Library Preprofessional (GLP) and other paraprofessional staff.
- →Participates in professional organizations such as the American Association of Law Libraries, and the Law Librarians Society of the District of Columbia as a representative of the library and actively participates in the advancement and promotion of the librarian profession.
Requirements

Two years experience as a professional librarian, preferably in an academic library. Experience in circulation or interlibrary loan preferred. Experience supervising students and/or paraprofessionals preferred. Experience with Ex Libris’ Alma and Primo VE preferred.
