Job Purpose
The Dayshift Electrician is responsible for carrying out planned, corrective, and improvement electrical maintenance during day operations to ensure safe, compliant, and reliable performance of electrical systems supporting zinc mining and processing activities.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Health & Statutory Compliance
- Perform all electrical work in compliance with Mine Health and Safety legislation, electrical regulations, and site procedures.
- Apply lock‑out / tag‑out, isolation, and permit‑to‑work procedures.
- Conduct task‑based risk assessments and participate in toolbox talks.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, defects, and near misses.
- Ensure all work meets statutory and company quality standards.
Planned & Preventive Maintenance
- Execute scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance tasks.
- Maintain electrical equipment including:
- LV and MV distribution systems
- MCCs, switchgear, and control panels
- Motors, starters, VSDs, and soft starters
- Lighting, small power, and reticulation systems
- Conduct inspections, testing, and condition monitoring.
Breakdown & Operational Support
- Provide daytime support to operations for electrical faults and breakdowns.
- Assist shift teams with complex fault finding where required.
- Support production stability by responding to urgent electrical issues.
Shutdown & Project Support
- Participate in planned shutdowns, outages, and maintenance campaigns.
- Assist with electrical installations, upgrades, and plant modifications.
- Support commissioning and post‑maintenance testing activities.
Fault Finding & Diagnostics
- Perform advanced fault finding on:
- Motors and motor control circuits
- Power distribution and protection systems
- Instrument power and electrical interfaces
- Interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
- Identify recurring faults and provide feedback for reliability improvement.
Documentation & CMMS
- Complete work orders and job cards in the CMMS (SAP / Pragma / equivalent).
- Record spares usage, defects, and maintenance feedback.
- Maintain accurate maintenance and inspection records.
Teamwork & Mentorship
- Work closely with Foremen, Shift Electricians, Instrument Technicians, and Operations.
- Assist with mentoring apprentices, assistants, and learners.
- Share technical knowledge and best practices with the team.
Minimum Qualifications
- Trade Test Certificate – Electrician
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4
- Valid Electrical Authorisation (as per mine regulations)
- Medically fit for mine work
Advantageous
- MV switching certification
- VSD and motor control training
- PLC fault‑finding exposure
- Mining electrical experience
Experience Requirements
- 3–6 years post‑trade electrical experience
Experience in:
- Mining or heavy industrial environments
- Plant electrical maintenance
- Planned maintenance execution
Technical Competencies
- Electrical installation and maintenance
- LV/MV systems and motor control
- Electrical testing and inspection
- Fault finding and diagnostics
- Interpretation of technical drawings
- CMMS usage
