Role Purpose
The Environmental Technician is responsible for monitoring, inspecting, and supporting environmental management activities at the zinc mine to ensure compliance with environmental legislation, permits, and company standards. The role focuses on environmental sampling, inspections, reporting, and implementation support to minimize environmental impact and maintain the mine's legal and social licence to operate.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental Monitoring & Sampling
- Conduct routine environmental sampling and monitoring, including:
- Water (surface water, groundwater, effluent)
- Air quality and dust fallout
- Noise and vibration
- Soil and waste samples where required
- Ensure sampling is conducted in accordance with approved procedures and permit requirements.
- Maintain and calibrate environmental monitoring equipment.
- Record, submit, and manage samples for laboratory analysis.
Compliance & Inspections
- Support compliance with environmental legislation, permits, and mine environmental management plans.
- Conduct regular environmental inspections of:
- Processing plant and workshops
- Tailings storage facilities (TSFs)
- Waste sites and hazardous material areas
- Surface water control structures
- Identify non‑compliances, spills, or potential environmental risks and report findings.
Reporting & Environmental Records
- Accurately capture environmental monitoring data and inspection results.
- Compile daily, weekly, and monthly environmental reports.
- Maintain environmental registers, sampling logs, and compliance documentation.
- Support preparation of data for regulatory submissions and audits.
Incident & Spill Management
- Assist in the response to environmental incidents and spills.
- Conduct initial assessments and collect evidence for investigations.
- Support corrective and preventative actions.
- Ensure timely reporting of incidents in line with legal and company requirements.
Environmental Programs & Initiatives
- Support implementation of environmental management plans and procedures.
- Assist with rehabilitation, erosion control, and waste management initiatives.
- Support water management, dust suppression, and pollution prevention programs.
- Promote environmental awareness and compliance on site.
Audits & Regulatory Support
- Support internal and external environmental audits and inspections.
- Assist with regulator site visits and information requests.
- Track actions arising from audits and inspections.
Safety, Health & Environment
- Comply with the Mine Health & Safety Act (MHSA) and site SHE standards.
- Perform duties safely and promote environmental risk awareness.
- Use correct PPE and follow safe sampling and field‑work procedures.
- Maintain good housekeeping in work and sampling areas.
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Natural Sciences, or related field.
- Minimum 2–4 years' experience in environmental monitoring, preferably in mining or heavy industry.
- Practical experience in environmental sampling and inspections.
- Basic computer literacy (data capture and reporting).
Desirable
- Experience in zinc or base‑metal mining operations.
- Knowledge of environmental permits, water use licences, or tailings facilities.
- Environmental sampling or monitoring certifications.
- Ability to communicate in local languages used on site.
