Annual Stipend
$1,100
Salary
Commensurate with placement on the SMS Salary Grid, based on years of teaching experience & education (TQS Category).
This is a bargaining unit position in the Professional Employees Association.
All candidates must hold a valid B.C. TRB Teacher’s Certificate and be legally able to work in Canada.
Summary
St. Margaret’s School (SMS) is Western Canada’s only girl-centered, independent day and boarding school located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the unceded traditional territories of the Esquimalt Nations, Songhees Nations, and W̱SÁNEĆ Nations. Founded in 1908, SMS is an international centre for girl-centered learning and leadership development, providing empowering education for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (boarding grades 7–12). St. Margaret’s School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School offering the Diploma Program.
The Instructional Leader plays a key role in fostering a culture of achievement within a curriculum area, in alignment with the school’s Strategic Plan. Instructional Leaders contribute significantly to the success and ongoing development of the school and to the advancement of student learning and achievement.
Instructional Leaders are integral members of the SMS Pedagogical Leadership Team. They are expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of current educational trends and a commitment to leading the implementation of high-impact teaching practices. In collaboration with the Curriculum, Instruction and Design Lead and the Principals, they support the continuous improvement of pedagogy and practice within their curriculum area.

Duties and Responsibilities
Girl-Centered Leadership
- Oversee the advisory program
- Ensure that all members of the community understand research-informed practices for working effectively with girls
- Support the development of the Why All Girls digital hub
- Develop partnerships with local organizations that support girls’ learning and leadership, such as Women in Tech
- Support the planning and delivery of the Educating Girls Symposium
Instructional Leader
- Support colleagues in developing high-quality programming within their disciplines, including interdisciplinary and experiential learning, to promote strong student engagement
- Contribute to the design and implementation of new initiatives within areas of expertise
- Model effective design and implementation of learning targets, unit plans, and year plans
- Collaborate with colleagues to create opportunities for enrichment and academic rigour
- Facilitate professional learning communities
- Attend and contribute to Curriculum Team meetings
- Promote and contribute to a positive school culture
Requirements
- Current and valid Teacher Certification through the Teacher Regulation Branch
- Strong understanding of adolescent development, mental health, and executive functioning (required)
- Experience in instructional leadership, coaching, or program coordination
- Proven ability to lead professional development and collaborate across teams
- Deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centred learning
- Background in counselling, educational psychology, or wellness education (asset but not required)
- Demonstrates exemplary teaching
- Demonstrates a proficient understanding of the BC curriculum
- Ability and desire to lead, to organize and to collaborate with others
- Excellent communication skills
- Embodies a growth mindset
- Experience working as part of a learning team, as well as leading change
- Commitment to and evidence of continued professional growth
- Maintains confidentiality and demonstrates integrity
