I'm partnering with a long-established, technology-focused organization in the energy infrastructure space to identify an entry-level Java Developer seeking to build real-world skills in a stable, mentor-supported environment.
This is a true junior role—ideal for someone who learned Java in school and is ready to apply it professionally, without the pressure of rapid feature delivery or unrealistic expectations. The client is intentionally structured to support early-career developers who want to grow deep expertise over time.
This role supports a large, mature Java/Swing desktop application used for technical data analysis in a specialized industry. The software is business-critical, complex, and long-lived—it's not a short-term rebuild or a startup experiment.
You'll work closely with a senior developer who has 20+ years of experience with this codebase and will serve as your primary mentor. The learning curve is meaningful—both technically and within the problem domain—but you will not be expected to figure things out alone.
Early contributions will be intentionally scoped: learning the system, fixing bugs, and making incremental improvements as your understanding grows. This is not a role where you're shipping new features in week two; it's a role where, over time, you develop expertise that is genuinely rare and valued.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Reading and understanding an existing, large Java codebase under close mentorship
- →Fixing bugs and implementing small enhancements
- →Writing and improving internal documentation as you learn the system
- →Working with SQL databases (H2 and PostgreSQL)
- →Gaining exposure to Git workflows, Ant build systems, and professional development practices
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Development, or a related field
- Solid foundational knowledge of Java (academic experience is sufficient if it's real and retained)
- Basic understanding of SQL
- Natural curiosity and persistence when working through unfamiliar problems
- Math and/or physics coursework is a strong plus—the domain involves sensor data and signal analysis
- A professional, dependable approach to work
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Multiple years of professional experience
- →Prior knowledge of the industry domain (training is provided)
- →Experience with Ant or H2 (you'll learn on the job)
- Onsite role in Tulsa
- Standard 40-hour work week
- Flexible start times to support school or family needs
- No on-call rotation, no crunch culture, no artificial deadlines
- Collaboration with engineers, analysts, project managers, and field technicians—this is a coding role, not customer support
- Direct reporting line to the IT Director
What We Offer
~1 min readCompensation reflects entry-level experience, with a clearly defined path upward as technical proficiency and domain knowledge increase. The client invests heavily in long-term development, and engineers who build and maintain specialized systems are rewarded accordingly over time.
A standard benefits package is included.
This is a niche application in a niche industry. Expect it to take a year or more before you're fully independent. The client is transparent about that—and intentional about supporting it through mentorship, stability, and realistic expectations.
If you're looking to change jobs every year or two, this likely isn't the right role. If you're looking for stability, mentorship, a normal work week, and the chance to build deep, durable expertise, this could be an excellent long-term fit.
