We are looking for an enthusiastic Associate Molecular Biologist, who is passionate about crop gene editing, to join the Genotyping Team within the Platform Department at Tropic. In this role, you will contribute to diverse aspects of genotyping for gene edited plants, including for experimental approaches and product development.


Job Purpose


The Platform Department provides technical and scientific leadership across Tropic in bioinformatics, transcriptomics, rapid cell-based assays, synthetic biology and molecular analysis. As part of this, the Genotyping team drives the detection and molecular characterisation of Tropic’s gene edited crops and provides key support throughout technology development, regulatory, IP, supply chain and commercial.


Within this role, you will design, advance and implement cutting-edge genotyping techniques to detect, characterise and deploy gene edited crops alongside our internal clients. You will focus on high-impact genotyping, technical process improvement and providing regulatory and IP support. The successful candidate will be trained by leading scientists in this rapidly developing area of biotechnology and will contribute directly to novel gene edited crops with global impact.


This position is ideal for candidates who are seeking their first opportunity in the Agritech sector, while continuing to engage in hands-on laboratory work.


Responsibilities  


  • Advance and deploy key genotyping workflows including genomic DNA extraction, PCR, next-generation sequencing (e.g. Illumina and Nanopore), qPCR, dPCR, copy number analysis, whole genome sequencing and data analysis.
  • Provide technical support for Regulatory and IP documentation.
  • Operate liquid handlers for automated processes.
  • Formally report scientific findings and technical updates to stakeholders.
  • The role may include line management of team members and support for other Platform teams in transcriptomics, synthetic biology and bioinformatics.


Requirements


Qualifications


Minimum: MSc in Plant Sciences, Biochemistry, Biology, or any other related discipline.


Core competencies


  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately follow protocols and instructions.
  • Analytical, process-oriented approach with an ability to establish, lead, troubleshoot and improve advanced workflows.
  • Excellent team player with professional, effective communication.
  • Demonstrable organisation, prioritisation and time-management skills suitable for multitasking.
  • Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Technical competencies  
  • Experience with DNA isolation, quality control and manipulation.
  • General experimental design, execution and troubleshooting for Genotyping approaches (e.g. PCR/qPCR amplification, next generation & Sanger sequencing and data analysis).


Desirable competencies


  • At least 1 year working experience in a research environment (academic or commercial).
  • Knowledge of and experience with gene editing technologies and bioinformatics for genotyping.
