Event Planning Intern (Summer Position)

The Ulnooweg Development Group is seeking an organized and energetic Indigenous youth to join our team as an Event Planning Intern for the summer. This uniquely remote position offers valuable hands-on experience in event coordination, community engagement, and program support while helping organize one of Ulnooweg’s signature annual events, the Ulnooweg Summer Solstice Run.

About the Role

Working alongside the Communications Manager, the Event Planning Intern will assist in coordinating and enhancing the Summer Solstice Run and its related programming. This includes supporting logistics, communications, and school-based virtual runs, as well as engaging Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to help strengthen the cultural and educational elements of the event. The intern will also support outreach at local events, schools, and camps to build awareness and participation in the Summer Solstice Run and Ulnooweg’s community programming.

While this role offers flexibility through remote work, the primary work location is within the Cumberland–Colchester County region. Access to the Millbrook office is available for workspace use, meetings, and to gather materials needed for outreach and community engagement activities.

Communications and Promotion:

  • Assist in developing promotional materials and social media content.
  • Support photography, video capture, and live coverage during events.

Program Support:

  • Help enhance event programming through creative and community-driven activities.
  • Gather participant feedback and contribute to post-event evaluation.

Essential Skills and Qualities

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently when needed.
  • Attention to detail and a positive, community-centered attitude.
  • Respectful and professional approach when working with Elders and community members.
  • Adaptable, dependable, and eager to learn event coordination and outreach skills.

Requirements

  • Must be an Indigenous youth (First Nations, Inuit, or Métis) between the ages of 15 and 30.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation.
  • Must provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Check prior to employment.
  • Willingness to travel across Nova Scotia and work occasional evenings or weekends.

What You’ll Gain

  • Hands-on experience in event planning, logistics, and community outreach.
  • Mentorship from Ulnooweg’s Communications Team.
  • Opportunities to work with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners.

About Ulnooweg Education Centre

The Ulnooweg Education Centre is an Indigenous-led registered charity that supports Indigenous youth and communities through education rooted in culture, language, and connection to land.

Guided by the Mi’kmaw principle of Etuaptmumk (Two-Eyed Seeing), Ulnooweg brings together Indigenous Knowledge and other ways of learning through land-based education and STEAM programming. Our work is grounded in strong partnerships with communities, Elders, and Knowledge Holders, ensuring our programs are respectful, relevant, and community-led.

Through these relationships, we create meaningful opportunities for youth to build confidence, develop skills, and explore pathways for their future, while staying connected to who they are and where they come from.
