Position Overview:

The Assistant Director for Assignment Services provides strategic leadership and oversight for all housing occupancy management and marketing processes for the UMBC residential system. This position leads the administration of housing applications, licensing and contracting, assignments, waitlists, room changes, billing coordination, and accommodation management.

Reporting to the Director of Housing Services, the Assistant Director ensures accurate data management, compliance with university policies, and strong customer service for students and families throughout the housing lifecycle. As a member of the Housing Services leadership team, this position collaborates with campus partners to support student success, enrollment goals, and operational efficiency within a residential system housing approximately 4,000 students and generating more than $30 million in annual revenue.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead administration of housing applications, contracts, assignments, waitlists, occupancy management, and room change processes.
  • Manage occupancy projections, yield analysis, and housing utilization strategies in support of enrollment and retention goals.
  • Coordinate special housing assignments including Living Learning Communities, summer housing, early arrivals, and transitional housing.
  • Oversee assignment exceptions, contract releases, accommodations, and special housing requests.
  • Collaborate with campus partners including Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Student Disability Services, Athletics, International Education, and Student Business Services.
  • Coordinate housing billing processes and oversee audits related to housing charges, deposits, and billing adjustments.
  • Maintain and enhance housing marketing initiatives including website management, digital communications, social media strategy, and outreach materials.
  • Serve as the functional lead for housing assignment and contract processes within StarRez and related systems.
  • Analyze housing and occupancy data to support operational decision-making, assessment, and reporting.
  • Supervise professional and student staff including recruitment, training, performance management, and staff development.
  • Serve in the Residential Life on-call rotation and support crisis response efforts.
  • Participate in divisional initiatives, strategic planning, committee work, and other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree preferably in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Education Technology, Management Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Three years of full-time, post-master’s degree experience in housing, residential life, or housing operations.
  • Experience working with housing management systems and database software, including StarRez.
  • Working knowledge of ADA principles and housing accommodation practices.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervision, staff development, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Knowledge of residence life administration, student development theory, and equity and inclusion practices.
  • Ability to manage complex operational processes and communicate effectively with students, families, and campus partners.
  • Knowledge of FERPA, ADA, Title IX, Clery Act, and related compliance standards.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Supervisory experience in housing assignments or occupancy management.
  • Experience with assessment methodology and reporting tools.
  • Experience with web management platforms such as WordPress.
  • Experience with marketing, digital communications, and social media strategy.
  • Experience with emergency response and on-call crisis management.

Salary:

Salary: $77,000 - $87,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
