The Biology Program at UConn Stamford seeks a Laboratory Technician 1 to support undergraduate biology laboratory courses. Under the direction of the Director of Academic Affairs, the incumbent will support instructional laboratory operations by preparing laboratory materials, setting up and maintaining laboratory experiments, assisting faculty and teaching assistants, maintaining equipment and inventory, and ensuring compliance with laboratory safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Collects materials/specimens to be used in laboratory exercises and prepares any needed reagents, media, stains, enzymes, solutions, lab supplies, or apparatus. 
  • Sets up and maintains the laboratory. Assigns equipment, glassware, and supplies. Assists others in proper and safe use of equipment. 
  • Assists in editing and updating lab manuals in assigned area of responsibility, and keeps current on new procedures. 
  • Assists with identifying and resolving routine experimental problems. 
  • Identifies and resolves problems/complications with methods, techniques, and procedures to improve the effectiveness of the demonstration materials. 
  • Monitor inventory levels, order supplies, and ensure the security of supplies and equipment.  
  • Ensures cleanliness and proper working order of laboratories. Performs maintenance and minor repair of laboratory equipment and instruments. 
  • Assists with enforcement of departmental safety rules, including creating and maintaining appropriate records. 
  • Participates in meetings to evaluate laboratory procedures. 
  • Performs related work as required. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.  
  • One to two years of related professional experience.  
  • Demonstrated ability to engage, connect, and work with diverse student, administrative, and faculty populations. 
  • Demonstrated experience with concepts, practices, and standard laboratory procedures. 
  • Demonstrated attention to detail. 
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Master’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, or a related field.
  • Prior work experience supporting instructional laboratories.
  • Experience writing and communicating laboratory procedures and results in a professional setting. 

This is a full-time, permanent position at the Stamford campus. This position requires the ability to occasionally move containers and trays weighing up to 25 pounds, to and from locations varying in height from 10 to 36 inches. The selected incumbent will be required to work weekends and evenings, as needed.
