Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.
We are looking for a passionate Backend Software Engineer to join the Waymo Payments & Identity team. Our work involves building the infrastructure that powers all financial transactions and user identity management for Waymo, ensuring that every ride is billed correctly and every payment is processed securely. You will help us handle integrations with multiple payment providers, support diverse payment methods, and build systems for promotions, credits, and automated financial reporting.
You will be developing high-quality, reliable, and scalable backend systems that form the backbone of mission-critical Waymo infrastructure, enabling new functionalities, supporting expansion into new markets, and ensuring extreme correctness and data integrity in all financial transactions.
- Design and ship billing and payment capabilities end-to-end, from payment flows and wallet management to fraud controls and reconciliation
- Build for correctness and security first. Payments data is critical; you will develop systems where data integrity and auditability are paramount.
- Work with third-party payment providers to ensure a seamless user experience.
- Scale the payments platform. As Waymo expands to new cities and services, you will design systems that can handle increased volume and complexity.
- Collaborate across Waymo. Work closely with Product and Finance to translate business needs into robust technical solutions.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- 3+ years of experience programming in backend coding languages.
- Strong foundation in computer science (data structures, algorithms, distributed systems).
- Excellent collaboration skills to work with cross-functional partners.
- Experience in C++
- Familiarity with Google infrastructure (e.g. Flume, Borg, Protocol Buffers, OnePlatform)
- Experience with payments, billing, or fintech systems where correctness is non-negotiable.
