Position Summary
The Public Health Inspector protects and promotes community health by conducting inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities across a variety of public health programs. Serving residents, businesses, institutions, and community partners, the role identifies and mitigates environmental health hazards, ensures compliance with legislation, and educates clients on safe practices. The Inspector supports disease prevention, responds to outbreaks, and provides expertise to guide healthy policies and environments. Through surveillance, progressive enforcement, and strong stakeholder engagement, the role drives safer public spaces and contributes to the overall public health mandate.

Promotes compliance with public health legislation through education, consultation, and appropriate enforcement actions.
Strengthens community protection by responding to outbreaks, conducting investigations, and implementing follow‑up measures.
Enhances program effectiveness through accurate documentation, analysis, and contributions to policy and procedure development.
Supports collaborative public health action by maintaining strong partnerships with stakeholders, agencies, and community groups.
Builds organizational capacity by mentoring students, sharing expertise, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
Core Responsibilities
Conduct inspections of food premises, public facilities, recreational water sites, and personal service settings for legislative compliance.
Investigate environmental health hazards, complaints, and communicable disease risks across residential and commercial settings.
Educate clients on public health requirements and guide them toward corrective actions and compliance.
Issue orders, notices, and enforcement documents and provide evidence as needed for hearings or court proceedings.
Review plans and advise architects, contractors, and operators on regulatory requirements for new or renovated premises.
Respond to outbreaks by conducting investigations, recommending control measures, and supporting follow‑up activities.
Collect environmental, water, food, and biological samples and interpret laboratory findings to determine next steps.
Lead rabies exposure investigations and ensure compliance with provincial legislation and follow‑up protocols.
Develop and implement environmental health interventions, programs, and procedures.
Mentor new staff and students, providing technical guidance and supporting skill development.
Participate in committees, work groups, and community partnerships to address public health issues and plan programs.
Maintain accurate, timely inspection records, reports, and documentation in accordance with organizational and legal standards.
Qualifications
Required
Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada); CPHI(C) issued by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors
Ongoing CIPHI(C) membership is a requirement
Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Health or equivalent combination of education and experience
Other Requirements
Knowledge of Ontario Public Health Standards
Proficiency with Microsoft 365, collaboration tools, and emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize workloads

Wage Grid:
CUPE Wage Grid 10 $39.32 - $45.79 hourly
All WECHU staff are required to show proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella and varicella through immunization records or blood work AND provide a two-step Mantoux tuberculin skin test or one-step Interferon Gamma Release Assay test PRIOR to employment start.
A Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) or a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) will be required as a condition of employment.
This position includes the option of hybrid work, whereby employees may be able to work remotely or from the office, based on departmental needs, job duties and personal work preferences. The successful candidate must reside within the province of Ontario and must be available to attend the office upon request.
